Jesus didn't look for great leaders. He looked for followers. His words of invitation to every disciple were "Come, follow me." There are at least 11 different places in the Gospels where Jesus says those words. Fact: We will never become good leaders until we become good followers.

The word adversity creates a big box in which we store a ton of negative terms: Adversity is: misfortune, trouble, difficulty, hardship, distress, disaster, suffering, affliction, sorrow, misery, tribulation, woe, pain, trauma, etc. However, today’s topic helps us understand that even adversity has its place in the process that God’s uses to transform us into what he wants us to be (Romans 8:28-29) Last week, we looked at some of the ways God transformed the Apostle Paul, and we read some great verses in which he listed a few of the adversities in his life: 2 Corinthians 12:10 “That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Paul’s words encapsulate the essence of our topic: Adversity is an Opportunity. In other words, God will even work through our adversities to change us into the image of his Son and into what he wants us to be.

Everything is going to change – including you. Life experiences, the people in our lives, our mistakes, our failures, and our successes all impact the way we transform. Sometimes the transformation is good, sometimes it’s not – it depends on how we handle the journey. Romans 8:28 is one of the most popular scriptures amongst Christians: Romans 8:28 (NLT) 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. We love that verse. It’s a good verse! However, we fail to read the verse after it: Romans 8:29 (NLT) 29 For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

“When the church is the church, it will multiply mission, and by multiplying mission we will multiply disciples, and when we multiply disciples we will, out of necessity, multiply congregations. It’s a perpetual movement which should define the life of the church.” “The church wasn’t created to stay in - but to go out. It wasn’t created to hoard God’s grace - but to share God’s grace. Church is a verb. It’s not a building. It’s not a worship service. We don’t go to church. We are the church. We actually church. Church is a verb.” “The church by definition is not a collective body meeting in a room – it’s a called out body moving through the world.” But, as we talk about the missionality of the church, there’s an issue we need to address: The local church body should never be neglected. “We can’t care for the rest of the world, if we don’t take care of one another and become strong here in the local church.”

John 1:45-46 (NLT). 45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46 “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nazareth was not a popular place in Israell! It was mostly populated with gentiles. It held no significant place in Jewish History. People from Nazareth were considered to be of no value at all. To call someone a Nazarene was an insult. However, God’s Son came from Nazareth. Do you ever wonder: What does God think about our communities, cities, and neighborhoods?
