Most people assume Matthew 6:1-4 is a passage about money. It is, in part. But Jesus is after something much deeper than your wallet. He is after your heart, your motives, and the quiet scoreboard you keep inside yourself.

The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus laying out what it looks like to live as a Christian. The Beatitudes describe the individual characteristics of a believer. The salt and light imagery shows how Christians are perceived in the world. And beginning in chapter six, Jesus gets practical, giving us three foundational spiritual disciplines for daily life.

Those three things are simple. Be generous. Pray. Fast. Not complicated. Not buried under layers of religious performance. Just three things.

"Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven. So when you give to the poor, don't sound trumpets before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets to be applauded by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. But when you give to the poor, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." - Matthew 6:1-4

Notice that Jesus does not say "if you give." He says "when you give." He assumes it. Generosity is not presented as an optional add-on to the Christian life. It is assumed to be part of it.

To be a Christian is to be like Christ. And Christ was generous. He gave life when we deserved death. He gave purpose when we were hopeless. He provided when we had nothing to stand on. Our generosity is simply an overflow of what He has already done for us.

As Jesus Himself said, "Freely you have received, freely give." Our giving is not something we manufacture. It is a response to grace.

Jesus warns against practicing righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. This is not just about dropping money in an offering plate while making sure everyone notices. It is about the quiet performance we put on every day, the image we manage, the reputation we protect.

Some of us spend more energy convincing others that we love Christ than we do actually walking with Him. We keep the facade polished on the outside while struggling deeply on the inside.

Here is the principle Jesus lays out: your reward is always connected to your audience. If you are performing for people, people are your reward. If you want God's reward, stop performing for the crowd.

This is a real tension worth addressing. In Matthew 5:16, Jesus says, "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:16

Then in chapter six He says do not practice your righteousness in front of others. So which is it?

The answer is found in one simple idea: forget about it.

The key to living a righteous life without performing for others is to live in a constant state of forgetfulness. Give, and forget that you gave. Serve, and forget that you served. Help someone, and move on as if it never happened.

When you do that, two things happen. First, you stop keeping score internally. You stop rehearsing all the times you gave, all the hours you served, all the sacrifices you made. Second, when others notice the impact of your life, all the glory goes to God because you genuinely had no idea.

That is how Matthew 5 and Matthew 6 fit together. When you forget what you did, and someone points it out, your honest response is "Glory to God." Because you were not tracking it. You were not managing it. You were just living.

It is easy to say we give without looking for recognition. But the real question is whether we are keeping score on the inside.

That internal scoreboard is exactly what Jesus is addressing. It is not just about what others see. It is about what you are holding onto privately.

When Christ saved you, He did not keep a record of everything you did against Him. He did not rehearse your failures before extending grace. He gave His life and, in His mercy, chose not to hold your sin over you.

"For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." - Hebrews 8:12

When we choose to forget what we have given, what we have done, and what we have sacrificed, we are reflecting the character of the One who forgot our sin for the sake of love. We are not just being generous. We are remembering Him.

Verse four closes with a promise. "Your Father who sees in secret will reward you." - Matthew 6:4

The original language carries the connotation of an open reward. What is done quietly and without fanfare, God sees. And what God sees, He honors openly. The doors that open, the favor that comes, the blessing that shows up unexpectedly, these are connected to a life lived without keeping score.

When God gets the glory, you get the open doors. When God gets the glory, you get the favor. That is not a transaction. It is simply how a life surrendered to Him tends to unfold.

Paul writes in Philippians 2 to "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." - Philippians 2:12

Salvation is a free gift. But living it out is an active, daily practice. Every day we face decisions about whether to act in a way that honors Christ or in a way that honors our own image. Righteousness is not a status we achieve. It is something we practice, imperfectly, every single day.

And part of that practice is learning to give, serve, and love without attaching our identity or our reward to whether anyone noticed.

This week, do one generous thing and tell no one. Do not post it. Do not mention it in conversation. Do not even replay it in your own mind as something you did. Give, serve, or help someone, and then let it go completely. Practice the discipline of forgetting.

If you find that difficult, pay attention to that resistance. It may reveal how much of your giving has been tied to recognition, even the quiet internal kind.

Ask yourself these questions as you go through the week:

The goal is not to give less or to hide your faith. The goal is to give so freely, and forget so completely, that when God rewards you openly, your only honest response is gratitude. Because you forgot you even did anything worth rewarding.

Few topics carry more emotional weight in the church than adultery and divorce. Jesus addresses both directly in the Sermon on the Mount, and His words cut deeper than most people expect. This is not a comfortable passage, but it is an important one for anyone who wants to understand what God truly values in human relationships.

To understand what Jesus is saying in Matthew 5:27-32, you have to understand the thread He is following throughout the entire Sermon on the Mount. He is not giving disconnected sayings. He is building a case.

He starts with this foundation in verse 17: "Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose." (Matthew 5:17, New Living Translation (NLT))

Then He raises the bar in verse 20: "But I warn you, unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!" (Matthew 5:20, New Living Translation (NLT))

That is a stunning statement. The Pharisees were considered the most religiously devoted people of their time. And yet Jesus says that is not enough. Why? Because following rules on the outside while the heart remains unchanged is not what God is after.

Throughout this section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus uses a specific phrase: "You have heard it said." He does not say "it is written." That distinction matters. He is pointing to what people had been taught, what had been passed down through tradition and religious instruction, and then He corrects or deepens it.

Many people grow up believing that Christianity is a checklist. Wear the right things. Avoid the wrong things. Follow the rules and you are holy. Jesus is dismantling that idea entirely. He is saying that true righteousness is a matter of the heart, not just behavior.

"You have heard the commandment that says, 'You must not commit adultery.' But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (Matthew 5:27-28, New Living Translation (NLT))

Jesus is not simply talking about a physical act. He is talking about how we see and value other people. When lust enters the picture, a person is reduced to an object, something that exists only to satisfy a momentary desire. That is the heart issue Jesus is addressing.

God designed human beings to be in committed, covenant relationships. The pattern of moving from partner to partner, what some call serial monogamy, is not how He designed us to live. Jesus points to the woman at the well as an example of someone living outside of that design, not to condemn her, but to reveal the truth of her situation.

"You have heard the law that says, 'A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a written notice of divorce.' But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery." (Matthew 5:31-32, New Living Translation (NLT))

This passage is difficult. It does not leave a lot of obvious room for the complicated realities of human relationships. But it is important to read it in the full context of Scripture rather than in isolation.

In Jesus' day, there were two schools of thought on divorce. One said divorce was only permissible in cases of sexual immorality. The other said a man could divorce his wife for virtually any reason, including something as trivial as burning a meal. Moses had allowed a certificate of divorce as a practical measure, partly to protect women who had very little social standing or legal protection outside of marriage.

Jesus is not ignoring the complexities of real life. He is confronting the casual, disposable attitude toward marriage that had developed. When divorce becomes easy and consequence-free, human beings become disposable. That is what He is pushing back against.

Yes. Scripture itself outlines conditions of the marriage covenant. When those conditions are not met, the covenant is broken. Abuse, neglect, and harm are real. The devil will try to make people in those situations feel trapped, but that is not the heart of God.

Christ came to set people free, not to keep them in misery. If someone is in a situation of physical danger or serious harm, seeking help is not a failure of faith. It is wisdom. There are legitimate grounds in Scripture for the dissolution of a marriage when the covenant has already been broken by the other party.

However, for those whose marriages are simply difficult, where two imperfect people are struggling to live together, the call is to work it out. Patience, commitment, and love are not optional extras. They are the foundation.

The reason marriage matters so deeply is found in Ephesians 5. Paul writes that the relationship between a husband and wife is a picture of the relationship between Christ and the church.

"For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her." (Ephesians 5:25, New Living Translation (NLT))

Wives are called to submit to their husbands as to the Lord. Husbands are called to love their wives the way Christ loves the church, sacrificially, completely, and without condition. The weight of that responsibility falls heavily on men. It is not about control. It is about laying down your life for someone else the way Jesus did for us.

When we understand marriage through this lens, divorce is not just a legal matter. It is a statement about how we view our relationship with Christ Himself. If we are willing to give up on the relationship that represents Christ and the church, what does that say about how we view our relationship with Him?

Living in holiness is not trendy. It is not easy. It requires saying no to things that feel natural and yes to things that feel inconvenient. But that is the standard Jesus sets. Not because He wants to make life hard, but because He knows what we were made for.

Throughout the Old Testament, God described Israel as His bride. And over and over again, Israel chased after other things. And over and over again, God stayed. That is the picture of what Christ has done for us. We are the ones who wander. He is the one who remains faithful.

That same faithfulness is what we are called to reflect in our marriages and in our personal holiness.

This week, take an honest look at the condition of your heart, not just your actions. Jesus makes it clear that what we think and what we allow ourselves to dwell on matters just as much as what we do. Holiness begins on the inside.

If you are married, make a deliberate choice this week to love your spouse the way Christ loves the church, not based on what they deserve, but based on your commitment. Do one specific thing to invest in that relationship, whether that is a conversation, an act of service, or simply choosing patience in a moment when it does not come naturally.

If you are single or recovering from a broken relationship, ask God to show you His love in a fresh way this week. Let Him be the source of your fulfillment before anything or anyone else.

Ask yourself these questions:

Jesus set a standard in the Sermon on the Mount that feels impossible to meet. He said our righteousness must surpass that of the Pharisees, and then closed with, "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." If that feels overwhelming, it should. But the point is not to crush you. It is to redirect you.

In Matthew 5, Jesus walks through several commands from the law and then raises the bar on each one. He is not adding new rules. He is clarifying what the law always meant at its core.

He opens verse 20 with a challenge: "Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven." Then He closes the section in verse 48 with: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

Everything in between is Jesus explaining what those two statements actually mean.

Six times in this passage, Jesus uses the phrase "you have heard it said." He does not say "the law says" or "Moses said." That choice of words matters.

In Jesus' day, most people could not read. They depended entirely on religious leaders to interpret and communicate Scripture. The situation was not unlike the pre-Reformation church, where ordinary people received the Word secondhand, filtered through someone else's interpretation.

Jesus was pointing out that what the people had been taught and what God actually intended were not always the same thing. He was drawing a line between secondhand religion and a direct encounter with the living Word.

The most important thing you can do to grow closer to Christ is to read His Word for yourself. Tools, teachers, and sermons can help, but they cannot replace your own time in Scripture. God will clarify more through your personal reading than any sermon ever could.

This is the thread running through every example Jesus gives in this passage.

In every case, Jesus is moving the conversation from the external act to the internal condition. The act is just the evidence of what is already happening in the heart.

Jesus is not saying that feeling angry is sinful. Anger is an emotion. What He is addressing is sustained, deliberate discord. The kind where someone wrongs you and you decide you are done with them permanently.

He says in verse 23 and 24: "So if you're offering your gift on the altar and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift in front of the altar. Go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, then come and offer your gift."

In Jesus' day, the altar was in Jerusalem. If you traveled hundreds of miles to worship and remembered an unresolved conflict, He was saying to turn around, go home, settle it, and then come back. That is how seriously He takes reconciliation.

God is more concerned with the relationship than with the religious act. Forgiveness is not primarily for the other person. It is for you. You offer it. They do not have to accept it. But you have to offer it.

Jesus' teaching here raises an important point about moral standards in general. Laws and rules can define a standard. They can even restrain behavior. But they cannot fix what is broken on the inside.

As Paul writes in Galatians, the law came to show us how far short we fall. It was never designed to save us. It was designed to point us to our need for something greater.

Checking off boxes, following rules, attending services, and doing all the right things can still leave you empty. That emptiness is not a failure of effort. It is a signal that the work needs to happen somewhere deeper.

The word Jesus uses for "perfect" in verse 48 does not mean flawless. It means complete. Whole. Fully formed.

"Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." - Matthew 5:48

That does not remove the weight of the standard. It reframes where the work happens. You do not achieve completeness by doing more. You find it in Christ.

When Nicodemus, a Pharisee who had followed every rule, came to Jesus confused, Jesus told Him He needed to be born again. Not try harder. Not add more disciplines. Be born again. Start over from the inside.

Paul puts it plainly: "Now we have been crucified with Christ and raised back to life with Him." Baptism is not a ceremony. It is a death and a resurrection. The old self goes under. Something new comes up.

In 2 Samuel, David wanted to build God a temple. God's response was essentially: have I ever asked you for that? Since I brought Israel out of Egypt, I have lived among you. Why are you trying to put me in a box?

The temple was eventually built. Then it was destroyed in 70 A.D. And Paul writes that now God dwells in our hearts. We are His temple.

God does not want to be left at church on Sunday. He wants to go with you. The question is whether we are willing to take Him.

In Ezekiel 36, when Israel was conquered and felt forgotten, God made a promise: "I will give you a new heart and my Spirit will be with you."

A new heart is not something you earn. It is something you receive. And it comes through surrender, not performance.

Paul writes in Romans 8: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death." - Romans 8:1-2

And further: "Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." - Romans 8:5

The goal is not to do more. The goal is to set your mind differently. To walk according to the Spirit rather than the flesh.

In Matthew 23, Jesus confronts the Pharisees with a vivid image. He says they are like people who wash the outside of a cup but leave the inside dirty. All the right appearances. All the wrong conditions on the inside.

God is not looking for people who have all the right words, the right theology, or the right programs. He is looking for people whose hearts are in the right place. Because as Luke 6 says, out of the heart the mouth speaks. When the heart is right, God can use you in ways you never expected.

This week, the challenge is simple but not easy: stop performing and start examining.

Take time this week to read a portion of Scripture not because you have to, but because you want to hear from God directly. Sit with it. Slow down. Let Him speak.

Then ask yourself honestly:

Righteousness is not about what you do. It is about who you are becoming. And who you are becoming starts on the inside, through surrender to Christ, through the new heart He promises to give. That is the inside job.

In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus delivers one of the most well-known teachings in all of Scripture. But there is a good chance we have been reading it in pieces when it was always meant to be read as a whole. When you remove the chapter headings and verse numbers added centuries later, something powerful emerges: Jesus is not changing the subject. He is building on it.

The verse numbers and chapter headings we see in our Bibles today were not part of the original text. They were added somewhere between the 13th and 15th centuries to help people study and reference Scripture together. That is helpful, but it also creates a problem. We start treating those breaks as changes in thought when they are not.

Matthew 5 opens with the Beatitudes, each one beginning with "Blessed are..." or "You are blessed." Then, without skipping a beat, Jesus continues: "You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world." Same structure. Same declaration. Same thought.

Jesus is not introducing a new topic. He is amplifying what He already said. The "you are" of salt and light flows directly from the "you are blessed" of the Beatitudes.

Here is something worth sitting with: the Bible does not explicitly define what Jesus means when He calls us the salt of the earth. There is no footnote in Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John that spells it out. Anyone who gives you a definitive answer is making an informed interpretation, and that is not necessarily wrong, but it is worth knowing.

What Scripture does give us are some meaningful clues.

In Leviticus 2:13, God gives a specific instruction about offerings: "Season all your grain offerings with salt. Do not leave the salt of the covenant of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings." - Leviticus 2:13 New Living Translation (NLT)

Salt was required as part of the sacrificial system. Nothing could be brought before God without it. And here is something fascinating from a scientific standpoint: when something burns, the carbon turns to ash. But salt does not burn. It remains. Salt was the thing that persevered through the fire.

In Numbers 18:19, God makes a promise to the Levites using the phrase "covenant of salt," signifying something permanent and unbreakable. In the Book of Ezra, salt is used to seal an oath. Across the Old Testament, salt carries the weight of permanence, holiness, and covenant commitment.

So when Jesus says "you are the salt of the earth," He may be saying something far deeper than "you add flavor to the world." He may be saying: you are the covenant people. You are the ones marked as holy and set apart. You are the ones whose presence makes the sacrifice meaningful.

Jesus asks a pointed question: if salt loses its taste, what good is it? It gets thrown out and trampled underfoot. This is not just a metaphor about being useful. It may be a warning about those who carry the name of Christ but have no real consecration behind it. Things added that were never truly part of it.

The question worth asking is this: are we actually holy, set apart, and committed to God, or are we just going through the motions?

To the Jewish people of the first century, light was not just a nice image. It was deeply theological. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." - Psalm 119:105 New Living Translation (NLT)

The prophet Isaiah told Israel that they were called to be a light to the nations. They carried the revelation of God, the Torah, and that made them the bearers of light in a dark world. That was their identity and their calling.

Now Jesus is standing on a hillside and saying the same thing, not just to Israel, but to fishermen, tax collectors, the poor, the mourning, the humble. He is opening up what was once exclusive to anyone willing to come.

Jesus says no one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket. You put it on a stand so it gives light to the whole room. The point is not just that your light should shine. It is that hiding it is a choice, and it is the wrong one.

There are people who have been called by God to something significant, equipped for something real, but they stay quiet because they do not want to seem strange or offend anyone. Here is the truth: if you belong to Christ, the world may already be uncomfortable with your presence. That is not a reason to hide. That is a reason to shine.

And when your light shines, the goal is clear. Jesus says in Matthew 5:16, "In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." - Matthew 5:16 New Living Translation (NLT)

If people are giving glory to God because of what they see in you, you are doing it right. If they are giving glory to you, something has gone sideways.

Right after declaring that we are salt and light, Jesus says something that seems like a sudden shift: "Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose." - Matthew 5:17 New Living Translation (NLT)

But this is not a shift. It is a clarification. Because what He just said would have raised serious questions for His Jewish audience.

He called ordinary people the salt, which was a priestly, covenantal element of the law. He called them the light of the world, which was the calling of Israel through the prophets. His listeners would have wondered: is He replacing the law? Is He doing away with what God established?

His answer is no. He came to fulfill it.

Galatians 3:10 tells us that those who rely on keeping the law perfectly are under a curse, because no one can keep it perfectly. But then Paul continues: "Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith." - Galatians 3:24 New Living Translation (NLT)

The law set a standard no human could meet. Jesus met it for us. He fulfilled every requirement. And through faith in Him, we are no longer slaves to what we could not accomplish. We become part of the promise. We become heirs of what God spoke through Abraham, through the prophets, through the law itself.

Jesus closes this section with a statement that should stop us in our tracks: "But I warn you, unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!" - Matthew 5:20 New Living Translation (NLT)

The Pharisees were the most religiously disciplined people of their day. If the bar is higher than them, none of us qualify on our own. And that is exactly the point. We cannot meet that standard. But Jesus can, and He did, on our behalf.

That is the gospel. That is why the Beatitudes matter. That is why salt and light matter. We are not earning our way in. We are living out of what He has already done for us.

This week, choose one specific way to let your light shine in your everyday world. It does not have to be dramatic. Tell someone why you have hope. Share what God has done for you. Let someone see your faith in action and point them toward God when they ask about it. Do not hide under the basket.

At the same time, take an honest look at your saltiness. Are you living a life that is genuinely set apart for God, or have you been blending in so much that there is nothing distinct about how you live, speak, or love?

Ask yourself these questions this week:

You are the salt. You are the light. Not because you earned it, but because He declared it. Live like it this week.

One of the hardest things a believer can do is truly live in the presence of God. Everything around us, from social media algorithms to workplace culture, is designed to keep us occupied and distracted. Nothing outside the walls of the church is designed to draw us closer to God. And if we are honest, sometimes even things inside the church can become substitutes for His actual presence.

Exodus 33 opens in a moment of tension. Moses and the Israelites are camped in the wilderness, and God has just told them He will fulfill His promise and bring them to the land He swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But there is a catch. God says He will not travel among them.

To understand why this is so significant, you have to understand what came before it.

The Israelites had witnessed miracle after miracle. They saw ten plagues devastate Egypt while they remained safe. They watched the Red Sea split and crossed on dry ground. They saw the waters close over Pharaoh's army. They were led by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. These were not small things. These were undeniable acts of God.

Yet while Moses was on the mountain receiving the law directly from God, the people grew restless. After six weeks of waiting, they went to Aaron and said they needed something to worship. They melted their gold and made a calf, and then, remarkably, they called it the Lord.

They did not deny that God existed. They had seen Him work. But they replaced His presence with something they could see and control.

This is a question worth sitting with. How many of us are working, sacrificing, and striving toward something we have convinced ourselves is what God wants, when really God simply asked us to wait?

Everyone worships something. Money, fame, knowledge, status. It is built into human nature. The question is not whether we worship, but what we worship. The Israelites were waiting for the revelation of God, not knowing it was already on its way down the mountain. Their impatience cost them dearly.

God told Moses to go down and deal with the people. He essentially said, "If I go down there right now, it will not go well." Moses descended, saw the chaos, and in his frustration, shattered the stone tablets God Himself had written.

What Moses did next is one of the most extraordinary moments in all of Scripture. He went back to God and interceded for the people. In Exodus 32:32, he says something so profound that he cannot even finish the sentence:

"But now, if you will only forgive their sin, but if not, erase my name from the record you have written." - Exodus 32:32 New Living Translation (NLT)

He loses the words. There is nothing he can offer that compares to God's mercy. He simply says, if you can forgive them, that is enough. And if not, take me too.

This is a picture of what Jesus did for us. He stood in the gap. He took our place. And God's response to Moses is a picture of His grace toward all of us:

"No, I will only erase from my record the names of those who have sinned against me." - Exodus 32:33 New Living Translation (NLT)

God does not erase Moses. He does not erase the people. He extends grace and tells them to keep moving.

This is where the story takes a turn that should stop every believer in their tracks. God tells Moses in Exodus 33 that He will send an angel ahead of them, drive out their enemies, and bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey. The promise will be kept. But God says He will not go with them.

God fulfills His promises, but He is not always in them.

Think about that. How many people have chased a goal, reached it, and found it completely empty? How many leaders have climbed to the top of their field only to fall from that height in a way that shocks everyone? Could it be that somewhere along the way, they stopped pursuing His presence and started pursuing only the destination?

Moses is standing in the middle of the wilderness with nothing around him. No water, no food, no family, no comfort. And God offers Him the promised land without His presence. Moses' response is remarkable:

"If you don't personally go with us, don't make us leave this place." - Exodus 33:15 New Living Translation (NLT)

He is saying, keep your promise. Keep the land. Keep the blessing. But do not take away your presence. I would rather stay in this desert with You than go to the promised land without You.

That is the posture of someone who truly understands what matters.

Living in His presence means you refuse to settle for second best. It means you will not accept a counterfeit version of what God offers. It means your goal is not the destination but the journey with Him.

It is easy to become so focused on where we are going that we forget to ask whether God is going with us. As a pastor, the temptation is real every single day. Planning for growth, thinking about facilities, dreaming about the future. But what God keeps whispering is this: can you be more focused on My presence than the destination?

Look around at churches that are full of people but empty of His presence. A building full of activity is not the same as a building full of God.

Years ago, a decision had to be made between a dream job and staying in an unfamiliar city with nothing. No car, no family, no money, no guarantees. The dream job was everything a person could want on paper. Staying made no practical sense.

But staying meant staying in the place where God's presence was leading. And looking back, that choice produced a marriage, a family, friendships, and a calling that the other path never could have offered.

Moses said it plainly: how will anyone know that You look favorably on us if You do not go with us? The favor of God is not something you manufacture. It is something you receive when you stay close to Him.

Moses makes one more request. He says, "Show me your glorious presence." He wants to see the full weight of who God is.

God's response is tender and instructive. He does not say He will show Moses His glory. He says He will show Moses His goodness:

"I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose." - Exodus 33:19 New Living Translation (NLT)

Sometimes God's glory looks like God's mercy. Where should you be right now based on your choices? And where has God placed you instead? That gap is His goodness.

God does not always show up in the way we expect. In 1 Kings, Elijah met God not in the earthquake or the fire, but in a still, quiet voice. In Genesis, God was in the fire that rained on Sodom. In Acts, He was in the earthquake that freed Paul. He shows up differently in every season.

The danger of tradition is not tradition itself. Jesus practiced tradition. Paul knew tradition. The danger is when tradition becomes a box we put God in. When we say He can only show up this way, with this song, with this instrument, at this moment. God moves when He is ready, and our job is to be ready to receive Him however He comes.

God told Moses to stand near the rock. He would hide Moses in the crevice, cover him with His hand, and let him see His goodness pass by. But Moses had to move to get there.

If you have been praying for God's presence and feel like you cannot hear His voice, consider whether you are still standing in the same spot. Sometimes receiving what God has for you requires moving to where He is calling you.

Like Samuel in 1 Samuel 3, when the voice of the Lord had not been heard in a long time and no one recognized it, the answer was simple. Eli told him to say, "Speak, Lord, your servant is listening." Sometimes the most powerful prayer is just: here I am.

Philip asked Jesus in John 14 to show them the Father. Moses asked to see God's glory. These are the same cry from different moments in history. And Jesus answered Philip with something that changes everything:

"Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father!" - John 14:9 New Living Translation (NLT)

If you want to see God's glory, you go through Jesus. You seek His face. You cry out to who He is. Scripture promises that if you seek, you will find. This is not about getting the job or the house or the answer to a specific prayer. This is about seeking Jesus first, and trusting that everything else will follow.

Paul captures this beautifully in 2 Corinthians 4. He writes to people living under pressure, confusion, and suffering. And he says:

"That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!" - 2 Corinthians 4:16-17 New Living Translation (NLT)

Moses asked for glory. God gave Him goodness. Jesus showed up. And now, through Christ, we can experience His glory in our worst days, our hardest seasons, our most confusing moments. His glory is not reserved for the mountaintop. It is available in the valley too.

This week, make a deliberate choice to pursue God's presence over your goals. That might mean spending time in prayer before you open your phone in the morning. It might mean sitting in silence and simply saying, "Here I am, Lord." It might mean letting go of a plan you have been chasing and asking God whether He is actually in it.

The challenge is this: identify one area of your life where you have been focused on the destination and ask God to redirect your focus toward His presence in that area. Then take one practical step this week to seek Him there.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:

God's goodness is passing by. The question is whether we are positioned to see it.

It is easy to go through all the right motions of faith and still feel like something is slightly off. You show up, you worship, you pray, you serve, but something feels misplaced. The story of Jacob in Genesis 35 speaks directly to that feeling, and it raises a question worth sitting with: What if you are worshiping in the wrong place?

Jacob was the grandson of Abraham, the son of Isaac, and a man with a complicated past. He was a deceiver by nature. He conned his twin brother Esau out of his birthright and later stole the family blessing that was meant for Esau. When Esau threatened to kill him, Jacob fled.

Running for his life with nothing but the clothes on his back, Jacob stopped for the night in a place called Bethel. He used a stone as a pillow and fell asleep. That night, God showed up.

In Genesis 28, Jacob had a dream of a stairway to heaven with angels ascending and descending. God spoke to Him and made a promise: the same covenant He made with Abraham, He now extended to Jacob. He promised to multiply his descendants and to be with him everywhere he went.

When Jacob woke up, he said something remarkable. "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it." (Genesis 28:16, New Living Translation)

Bethel was not a beautiful or impressive place. It was rocky, arid, and barren. But that is exactly where God chose to meet Him. Sometimes we expect to encounter God in a big revival or a powerful worship service, but He may be ready to meet us right in the middle of our emptiness.

After years of working for his uncle Laban, being deceived himself, gaining a family and flocks, and wrestling with God in Genesis 32, Jacob was finally heading back home. God had promised Him the land of Bethel. That was the destination.

But Jacob stopped 20 miles short. He camped in a city called Shechem. And he did not just camp there temporarily. He purchased land. He set up an altar. He settled.

Jacob was worshiping in the wrong place. He was doing the right things, but in the wrong location. He had settled for good enough when God had something more for Him.

Shechem was not a terrible place. Jacob had security there. He had a city nearby, resources around him, and a sense of stability. But it was not Bethel. It was not where God told Him to go.

This is a picture of what can happen in our own spiritual lives. We find a comfortable place. We have a routine. We go to church, we pray sometimes, we do the things. But deep down, something feels slightly off. That may be because God is calling us somewhere deeper, and we have settled for just enough to feel okay.

God's word to Jacob in Genesis 35:1 was direct: "Get up and go to Bethel. Settle there, and build an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother, Esau." (Genesis 35:1, New Living Translation)

Before Jacob could move toward Bethel, there was a process. God did not wait for Jacob to have it all together before calling Him. But there was still a preparation involved.

Jacob told His household to throw away anything that was pulling their attention away from God. Foreign gods represent whatever competes with God for first place in our lives. It could be work, relationships, habits, or even family. Anything that consistently pulls your focus away from God deserves a hard look.

Jacob called his people to purify themselves. The truth is, we cannot clean ourselves spiritually. But Jesus already did that work. As it says in 1 Corinthians 6:11: "You were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 6:11, New Living Translation)

Every verb in that verse is passive. God is the one doing the cleaning. Our job is to come to Him.

This speaks to our outward life reflecting what God has done inwardly. It is about being willing to let what Christ has done for you show. Not having all the answers, but being confident in what He has done in your life.

Here is something important about Jacob's story. God called Him before He had it all figured out. The calling came first. The process followed. God did not wait for Jacob to be perfectly prepared before giving Him a direction.

If you feel unqualified for what God is placing on your heart, you are in good company. The question is not whether you are ready. The question is whether you are willing to trust Him and take the next step.

There is a small but powerful detail in Genesis 35. When Jacob's household handed over their foreign gods, Jacob did not burn them or destroy them the way Moses destroyed the golden calf. He hid them. He buried them under a tree.

Scripture never tells us he went back for them. He just kept walking.

Sometimes we want to quit everything cold turkey, and that is admirable. But sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is just put it away for today. Hide it. Walk away from it for 24 hours. Then do it again tomorrow. Faithfulness is often built one day at a time, not in one dramatic moment.

Bethel was 20 miles uphill from Shechem. In open, barren terrain, Jacob's entire household was visible to everyone around them. They were exposed. They were vulnerable.

And yet, Genesis 35:5 tells us: "As they set out, a terror from God spread over the people in all the towns of that area, so no one attacked Jacob's family." (Genesis 35:5, New Living Translation)

God shielded them along the way. He will do the same for you. Vulnerability before God and before your community is not weakness. It is the posture that invites His protection and provision.

When Jacob first named the place Bethel in Genesis 28, he was naming a location. He knew the place where God had appeared.

But in Genesis 35:7, after everything he had been through, he called it El Bethel, which means the God of the house of God. He was no longer just naming a place. He was declaring a relationship with the God who had answered Him in His day of distress.

That is the difference between religion and relationship. One knows the place. The other knows the God of the place.

The narrator in Genesis 35 has to clarify that Bethel was also called Luz, because that was the name everyone else used. Jacob was the one who called it Bethel. The maps said Luz. The surrounding cities said Luz.

Not everyone will recognize what God is doing in your life. Not everyone will understand the encounter you have had with Him or the transformation that is taking place. But that does not change what happened. You still go. You still worship. You still build the altar to the God who answered you in your day of distress.

This week, take an honest look at where you have settled. Like Jacob in Shechem, it is possible to be doing all the right things in the wrong place, close to where God wants you but not quite there. The challenge this week is to identify one area of your life where you have settled for good enough instead of pressing into what God is actually calling you toward. It might be your prayer life, your devotional time, a habit you keep returning to, or a relationship that is pulling your attention away from God.

You do not have to fix everything at once. Just put it away for today. Take one step uphill toward your Bethel.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect this week:

God is not waiting for you to have it all together. He called Jacob before Jacob was ready. He is calling you too. Get up. Go up. Build the altar. Worship the God who answers in the day of distress, and who has been with you everywhere you have gone.

Sometimes life doesn't go the way we planned. We make mistakes, take wrong turns, or find ourselves in situations we never expected. But what if those moments weren't accidents? What if God was orchestrating something bigger than we could see?

The Book of Philemon, the shortest letter Paul ever wrote, gives us a powerful look at how God works through the unexpected.

Philemon is a personal letter from the Apostle Paul to a man named Philemon, a believer in the Colossian church who hosted a congregation in his home. Philemon was a man of means. He owned a house large enough for a church to meet in, and he likely owned slaves, one of whom was a man named Onesimus.

Onesimus ran away. We don't know exactly why, but the context suggests he was done. He wanted out. And in running, he may have also stolen from Philemon.

What happened next is where the story gets remarkable.

Onesimus, a runaway slave in the vast Roman Empire, somehow ended up in the same jail cell as the Apostle Paul. And not just any Paul. The same Paul who was a close friend of his master, Philemon.

Think about that for a moment. The Roman Empire was enormous. There were no cars, no phones, no GPS. And yet this one man, running from his past, ends up right next to the one person who could change his future.

Paul captures this perfectly in verse 15 of Philemon:

"It seems you lost Onesimus for a little while so that you could have him back forever. He is no longer like a slave to you. He is better than a slave, for he is a dear brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord." - Philemon 1:15-16 New Living Translation (NLT)

That word "perhaps" is significant. Paul doesn't claim to have all the answers. He simply points to the possibility that God was behind it all.

Detours are frustrating. Nobody likes them. You have a plan, a destination, and suddenly you're rerouted down a road you didn't choose.

But detours serve a purpose. They show you roads you never would have taken. They introduce you to people you never would have met. They build something in you that the straight path never could.

Onesimus didn't plan to meet Paul. He didn't plan to hear the gospel. He didn't plan to be transformed. But God used a desperate decision to bring Him to the right place at the right time.

The same is true for us. Sometimes the things that feel like failures are actually the very things God is using to redirect us toward Him.

Paul addresses this directly in his letter to the Romans:

"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them." - Romans 8:28 New Living Translation (NLT)

Notice the qualifier. It's not just for anyone. It's for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. That means even your worst moments, your biggest mistakes, your most painful detours, are not outside of God's reach when you belong to Him.

Joseph is another example of this. Thrown into a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, forgotten in an Egyptian prison. And yet he said to those same brothers:

"You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people." - Genesis 50:20 New Living Translation (NLT)

What others mean for evil, God means for good. That is not just a nice saying. It is a biblical promise.

One of the most beautiful moments in this short letter is when Paul tells Philemon that if Onesimus owes him anything or has wronged him in any way, to charge it to Paul's account. Paul says he will repay it.

That is the gospel in one sentence.

We are all Onesimus. We have all run. We have all fallen short. Paul writes in Romans that every single one of us has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. None of us could pay our own debt.

But Jesus stepped in. He looked at the full account of everything we owe and said, charge it to Me. I will repay it.

"Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God." - 1 Peter 3:18 New Living Translation (NLT)

That is what Paul is reminding Philemon of. You have been forgiven much. Now extend that same grace to someone else.

History tells us that Onesimus went on to become a bishop in that region. The runaway slave. The thief. The one who had nothing and no one. He became a leader in the early church.

Why? Because someone took him in. Because someone heard the call of God and responded with grace instead of judgment.

That is what God can do with a life that has been surrendered to Him, no matter where that life has been.

It's easy to seek God when everything falls apart. But what about when life is comfortable? What about when the relationship is going well, the job is stable, and things feel manageable?

The invitation of Philemon is not just to receive grace in hard times. It is to walk with God consistently, to keep Him at the center, and to trust that He is working even when you cannot see it.

Perhaps the detour you are in right now is not a punishment. Perhaps it is an invitation to know Him more deeply than you ever have before.

This week, take one situation in your life that feels like a detour, a mistake, a closed door, or an unexpected hardship, and intentionally bring it before God in prayer. Instead of asking only "Why is this happening?" ask "Lord, what are You doing in this? What do You want me to see?"

Write down what comes to mind. Look for the ways God may already be at work in the middle of what feels like a mess.

Ask yourself these questions:

God is not surprised by where you are. He is not scrambling to fix your situation. He may have already been orchestrating something you cannot yet see. Trust Him with the detour.
