Welcome to Community Connections with Jeff Newgard! As the President & CEO of Bank of Idaho, I am fascinated with authentic and real conversations and establishing long term relationships. This video series is my opportunity to do just that - connect with local business owners and leaders to hear their stories. My personal mantra is, “People Bank With People.'
Today's guest is David Adler, President of The Alturas Institute. The Alturas Institute is a non-profit organization created to promote the Constitution, gender equality, and civic education.
In this episode, Dr. David Adler, a renowned Constitutional Law expert and avid golfer, shares his journey of going from newsroom intern to being President of the Alturas Institute.
During his early teenage years, Dr. David Adler's two intellectual interests were Journalism and the Constitution, particularly the first amendment. After pursuing his passion and landing an internship, doors started to open, and he moved into news reporting. Some of his articles won awards and were even featured in the New York Times and Washington Post.
After graduating from college, Dr. Adler went to work at the Salt Lake Tribune. Although he was satisfying his journalist interests, his passion for the constitution remained high and unfulfilled.
Dr. Adler discusses the decision to quit his job and enroll in grad school, which led to working under professor Warmouth. Professor Warmouth became Dr. Adler's mentor and was one of the nation’s top constitutional law scholars.
One of Dr. Adler's goals has been trying to find a place for the Constitution in the hearts and minds of Americans everywhere and if we do that, we promote our democracy, we strengthen it, and citizens become stronger.
Dr. Adler shares how we need to be able to disagree politely and with courtesy all the while maintaining friendships. It's tough to maintain a democracy in which we emphasize discussion and debate if people treat those with whom they disagree with as their enemies.
Listen and enjoy Dr. David Adler's story.
