Matt McCarten is a political organiser and trade unionist, of Ngāpuhi descent. Active with trade unions including the Hotel and Hospital Workers' Union, he also founded the Unions 'One' and 'Unite'. He has been involved with leftist or centre-left political parties including the Labour, New Labour, Alliance, and Mana.

Dr Bryce Edwards has a PhD’s Thesis on NZ Political Parties: A Study of Ideological and Organisational Transformation. Bryce has extensively researched political finance in NZ.
