En español, muchas veces usamos la palabra “se” para decir que dos personas hacen algo entre ellas o incluso a sí mismas. Por ejemplo, la frase “se miraron” puede significar tanto they looked at themselves como they looked at each other, dependiendo del contexto. Sin embargo, en inglés es muy importante distinguir entre una acción reflexiva (cuando alguien hace algo a sí mismo) y una acción recíproca (cuando dos o más personas hacen algo mutuamente).

En este post, vamos a enfocarnos en el uso de “each other”, que se utiliza cuando dos o más personas hacen algo una a la otra. Verás ejemplos claros y fáciles de recordar, y también aprenderás la diferencia entre “each other” y los pronombres reflexivos como “themselves”.

In Spanish, the word “se” can be used to say both:

They killed themselves (reflexive)

They killed each other (reciprocal)

But in English, we make a clear difference between reflexive pronouns (like “themselves”) and reciprocal pronouns (“each other” or “one another”).

Let’s look at the difference with examples!

We use reflexive pronouns when the subject and the object are the same person or group. The action goes back to the same person.

Examples:

They killed themselves.
(They committed suicide — each one caused their own death.)

They looked at themselves in the mirror.
(Each person looked at their own reflection.)

They prepared themselves for the exam.
(Each person studied on their own.)

Reflexive pronouns:

I – myself
You – yourself
He – himself
She – herself
It – itself
We – ourselves
You (plural) – yourselves
They – themselves

We use “each other” when two or more people do the same action to one another.

Examples:

They killed each other.
(They fought and both died.)

They looked at each other and smiled.
(Person A looked at person B, and B looked at A.)

They love each other very much.
(Both people love one another.)

Common reciprocal pronouns:

each other (most common)

one another (also correct, often used for more than two people, but both are used in everyday English)

The couple hugged ___.
a) themselves
b) each other

The kids dressed ___ for the school play.
a) themselves
b) each other

They didn’t speak to ___ for weeks after the argument.
a) themselves
b) each other

The team congratulated ___ after winning.
a) themselves
b) each other

The players pushed ___ to keep running.
