Our first speaker, Mackenzie Lucero DO 2024, will share her lessons learned from transitioning to clinical education. This longer episode (28 minutes) briefly covers the history of BMI and size bias in the United States. Dr. White then offers some alternative approaches to discussing weight, weight loss and body size by shifting the conversation. She suggests asking the patient “How do you want to feel in your body?” and “What do you want your body to be able to do or keep doing?” She covers common pitfalls in movement and nutrition counseling and suggest a more Person-Centered approach to patient care.

Dr. White shares advice she was given as a 3rd year medical student when she was struggling to figure out which specialty was best for her. She shares the 3 questions, how she answered these questions and how she ultimately figured out she was (and is) and a Family Physician. Dr. White also calls out the internal and external pressure to pick a specialty based on status, prestige and perceived opportunities for wealth.
