In this episode of CompassPoint, we sit down with Dr. Hayley Cleary, a professor of criminal justice and public policy at VCU's Wilder School. Cleary shares information about her research on interrogations, her experience working with state policymakers to influence policy, and her experience pursuing and obtaining an NSF grant. She also shares advice and strategies for students and faculty who are interested in pursuing grants and in using their research to influence policy.
Dr. Shelly Smith, a Clinical Associate Professor and the Director of VCU's DNP Program in the Department of Adult Health and Nursing Systems, shares her expertise about health inequities and the coronavirus pandemic. This includes major health equity issues that have arisen; steps that policymakers, healthcare providers, and the public can be taken to address them; and the importance of a proactive approach moving forward.
Each year, the Center for Public Policy's Translational Research Fellows program connects faculty members from across VCU with state and local policymakers interested in learning more about the Fellow's research area. Selected faculty receive one-on-one mentoring from CPP staff as they develop an outreach plan for their specific area of research. The goal? To translate high-quality research into public policies for the commonwealth.
The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute (GEHLI), housed within the Center for Public Policy at VCU's Wilder School, promotes the development of current and emerging leaders in academic institutions; other public, private and nonprofit organizations; and communities. Consistent with the VCU's mission, GEHLI is committed to identifying and nurturing the next generation of leaders through leadership training and public policy research. Harris.
