Comprehend THIS!

Grading in a comprehensible input classroom rarely matches a traditional gradebook cleanly, and this episode of Comprehend THIS! is about the gap between what a student can actually do and the letter grade that's supposed to represent it. Pamela and I talk through the quiet workarounds CI teachers use and what a grading system built for acquisition might actually look like.

Progress reports just went out, and there's a mismatch a lot of CI teachers know well: a student who can genuinely function in the target language earning a lower grade than one who memorized a list of vocabulary. In this episode of Comprehend THIS!, Pamela and I talk about the moment we each first noticed that gap, the frustration of grading acquisition-based growth inside a traditional grading system, and the quiet workarounds we've used but rarely said out loud.

We also share a concrete piece of how we grade differently now, what we stopped doing because it wasn't measuring anything real, and what we've had to accept about grading that we didn't want to accept. Liz Groothof Croddy is the owner of Girasol Languages, where she teaches privately in a variety of languages and occasionally takes on interpretation and translation work. She spent 30 years teaching in public high schools, mostly Spanish and Japanese, plus two earlier years in private schools. She's taught languages she's fluent in and languages she's still learning (and she'll tell you she never stops learning any of them). Now retired from public education, Liz teaches adults at home and on Zoom at all levels, specializing in Spanish, French, Italian, and Japanese.
