Achieving effective and acceptable means of user authentication has been a long-recognised challenge of IT security. Steven Furnell examines the situation, and considers the fact that while the range of authentication opportunities has diversified, we are still some way from having a universally applicable and effective solution.

Mobile devices add new opportunities for cybercriminals. The volume of malware is growing, and risks also come from data leakage, and loss or theft of devices.

David Emm highlights the growing threat from mobile malware, the risk to corporate data and the need to establish a 'follow-me' security strategy to secure the devices.

Passwords are long recognised as an area in which users undermine protection. However, while they have shortcomings, two points should be noted before completely dismissing them. Firstly, guidance and enforcement of good practice is often limited, even on leading sites. Secondly, users’ selections can be positively influenced by ensuring that guidance is provided.

Recent years show a drastic advancement of attacks on companies. Attacks on systems connected to the Internet are standard and are automated to a high degree. Thomas Hackner presents a practical demonstration on how attackers from the Internet can compromise an internal system and use it toadvance in the network until domain administrator rights are achieved.
