  • Joy Pereira: The most memorable moments of a 20-year career at Sydney Opera House

On this episode Brian is joined by Joy Pereira.

Have you ever been to a concert or a show and wondered about all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into making it happen? In this episode, we get an exclusive look at the life of a stage manager from Joy, who worked at the Sydney Opera House for 20 years.

Joy shares her earliest musical memory of listening to Barry Manilow in the back of a Volvo, and how that sparked her interest in the entertainment industry. She talks about her role as a stage manager and the variety of shows and events she worked on, ranging from big rock gigs to plays and corporate events.

One interesting topic they discuss is the gig culture in Sydney and whether it's sustainable for bands to make it in Australia or if they need to go overseas. Joy explains that the music scene has changed since the 90s and the lockout laws have had a negative impact on the industry. However, social media has made it easier for bands to get their music out there, but algorithms can also be a hindrance. Joy emphasizes the importance of timing and engagement to get noticed on social media.

Joy also shares some funny stories and talks about dealing with massive egos in the industry. She believes that the best artists are those who are prepared and give their all on stage, and emphasizes the importance of giving both the artist and the audience the best experience possible.

Finally, Joy talks about her decision to start a podcast called "Nerds of Joy" and how she chooses her guests. She explains that she wanted to explore new opportunities for growth and creativity beyond her role as a stage manager. She encourages people to pursue their passions and live their best lives.

Overall, this episode provides a fascinating look at the art of stage management and the entertainment industry. Joy's passion for music and storytelling shines through as she shares her experiences and insights. So next time you're at a show, take a moment to appreciate all the hard work and dedication that goes into making it happen.

  • Justin VR

On this episode Brian is joined by Justin VR.

Justin VR is a singer-songwriter from Cape Town who has actively been involved in events and entertainment for over 25 years with his own sound and lighting business. His love of music began from his childhood years, spending countless hours browsing and listening to his father’s extensive LP collection. He was drawn into every genre imaginable from Rock, Folk, Blues, Country to Pop, and everything in between.

2020 will always stand out as the year when the world was turned on its head, but it was also the year that Justin’s personal music journey begun. Artists around the world reverted to streaming in the hope of getting their voices and music heard. Justin did the same and started weekend online sets from his social media pages called ‘The Garage Sessions’. Producer, musician, and songwriter Malcolm Ormond tuned in with his first live stream and called Justin soon thereafter. They worked on some covers over the years, but this was different. He had something else in my mind and soon they were recording and writing together. A few months later they released a Bluesy-Rock-tinged single ‘Got Me Blind’ reflecting on what lockdown had done to the world, and how it changed them as well. The song was well received with both international and local airplay.

Constantly blending guitar-driven Rock with Modern Country and Pop, Justin VR has firmly settled in his own unique sound with follow-up singles and is set to release his latest ‘She Said …’ on Friday 19 May.

  • Fourth Son South

On this episode Brian is joined by Peter Toussaint from Fourth Son South.

Fourth Son South is an Alternative Indie Pop Rock Band from South Africa formed by Dutch-born guitar maestro Peter Toussaint. After his debut solo release ‘One Day’ (2018), Peter enlisted bass player Franco Jamneck and drummer Carel Viljoen and toured as a trio under the name ‘Peter T Band’. At the end of 2019, the band recorded their debut EP ‘Another Mile’ under the name ‘Fourth Son South’ that was released in April 2020 … just as the world turned to lockdown with Covid-19. During lockdown, Peter wrote and recorded songs that formed the basis of their first full length album ‘The Sounds Around Your Head’. Guitarist Dale McHardy was subsequently recruited to perfect the live sound and the quartet proceeded to release another single ‘Hold On’ in July 2021.

In February 2022 Franco Jamneck left the band, and Peter started wanting a stronger focus on multi-harmonies. Bernhard Viljoen, a bass player with a phenomenal ability for vocal harmonies was recruited, and the band released their EP ‘Machine’. Based on the success of the single and music video for ‘Tomorrow’s Better’ featuring Melissa Osborne on vocals, Peter recruited female singer Meel Vignetting, who played with the band for a short time, before Sarah Jade Gardiner joined full time. Sarah is a young, experienced singer and music teacher from Johannesburg who won the Performing Arts Competition South Africa (PACISA). With her amazing vocal capabilities and warm personality, she completes the lineup of Fourth Son South.

To date Fourth Son South enjoyed success with their singles ‘Secret Place’ (Another Mile), ‘They Run, We Hide’, ‘Positive’, ‘Reflections’ (The Sounds Around Your Head), Hold On’, ‘Tomorrow’s Better’ (Machine), and 'The Cold' which all received considerable global airplay, especially in the US and UK. The band was interviewed on multiple radio stations (including Jacaranda & MIX FM) in South Africa and around the world. Their previous single 'The Cold' reached #1 on the 5fm Indie Chart. To date Fourth Son South played notable show and festivals like Woodcrock, STRAB, Bos Boogie and represented South Africa at the international La Ley del Rock Online Festival held in Argentina and Italy.
