  • Jason Oosthuizen - Oooth

On the 100th episode of Concerts That Made Us Brian is joined by Jason Oosthuizen from Oooth.

9th of December seen the release of Catastrophe, the new album from South African hard rockers Oooth, led by renowned drummer, guitarist, and vocalist Jason Oosthuizen. The album was recorded and produced by Jacques Du Plessis at his High Seas Studios in Johannesburg and features guest appearances from some of South Africa’s most prestigious musicians, namely Albert Frost, Arno Carstens (Springbok Nude Girls), Cito (WONDERboom) and the legendary PJ Powers.

“The album was written between 2021 and 2022 and mostly revolves around experiences throughout this time. Some life-changing decisions that were made, appreciation for the few consistencies in life, and some very sad and traumatic stories all played part in the writing process.” Comments Jason. He adds, "We are very excited to launch this new album, not only because we feel this is definitely our best one yet and so much more effort was put into it, but I also got to collab with some more of my favourite SA Musos, Albert Frost, Cito, and Arno Carstens. Putting it all together where I feel most at home, High Seas Studios, also played a big part in the overall excitement I feel for this album. " - Jason

Since November 2018 Oooth has released 2 Studio Rock Albums, 2 Live DVDs, 1 Acoustic and 1 Acoustic live album, with some more exciting releases planned for the remainder of 2022 and 2023. Several Music Videos create a full portfolio for this 4-year-old band.

Oooth has also grown into a diverse brand consisting of Oooth Clothing & Merch, Oooth Coffee (2 signature blends), and Oooth Wine. (Pinotage – original varietal to South Africa) Oooth is also known for playing it forward where it matters. In June 2020 Oooth teamed up with Tattooer’s Unite to create a live show & crowd-funding initiative to raise funds for Tattoo artists & Stage crew that lost their income due to COVID19 restrictions. In September 2020 a full album launch of ‘Who cares what you think – Acoustic’ paired with an awareness campaign for Farm Murders & Gender-Based Violence in South Africa was the second initiative, with over a quarter million rand raised for these 2 causes.

Several Oooth songs received airplay & press in Norway, Germany, Australia, Ireland, UK, America, & South Africa as well as number 1, top 5, top 10, and Top 40 radio rankings. In 2021 ‘Nothing’s Gonna Change’ was also nominated for Best Rock Album at the South African Music Awards.

  • Charlie Tsiolis - Aftermath

On this episode Brian is joined by Charlie Tsiolis from Progressive Thrash Metal Band AFTERMATH.

Aftermath are currently putting the finishing touches on No Time To Waste, their forthcoming third album in a trilogy, on which the title track described above is included. The new album is a departure from the previous dark, concept album installment in the trilogy. It also includes the band’s re-imagining of the John Lennon classic, "Give Peace a Chance".

Chicago based Aftermath, fronted by Kyriakos "Charlie" Tsiolis, formed in October 1985 when Charlie and his schoolmate Steve Sacco got together. This early incarnation released their first demo in 1986 featuring “Sentenced to Death”, “Revenge”, “Shotgun” and “The Aftermath”.

Twenty-five years after its formation, Aftermath's music made its return in 2011 with the release of the Box Set 25 YEARS OF CHAOS on Area Death Productions and the vinyl When Will You Die on F.O.A.D. The reemergence of one of the most original thrash bands ever continued in 2014 with their decision to reunite for several concerts in 2015. Coming off their first show in 20 years at Ragnarokkr Metal Apocalypse in their hometown of Chicago, the band ripped the stage apart at Headbanger’s Open Air in Hamburg, Germany that summer. In the Fall of 2015, the reunion continued with the reissue of Eyes of Tomorrow.

Tune in to hear all about:

    • The upcoming album "No Time to Waste"
    • A deep dive into the influences behind the lyrics of Aftermath, discussing many conspiracy theories along the way.
    • How the band dealt with the record label going bankrupt during the recording of "Eyes of Tomorrow"

  • The Amblers

On this episode Brian is joined by Justin Swart from The Amblers.

The Amblers are a dirty rock power duo made up of Justin Swart (guitar, vocals) and Jason Hinch (Drums). Unlike, say, the White Stripes, however, these fellas mesh a swinging Yardbirds-meets-Raconteurs vibe with a folk-induced mind-set that makes for a more cerebral listen whilst still rocking out completely, stripped of any bloated clutter.

The Amblers released their new album "Shallow Pools" on vinyl via Lay Bare Recordings on 30th September 2022.

  • Ruff Majik

On this episode Brian is joined by Johni Holiday, frontman and chief songwriter of South African stoner rockers Ruff Majik.

Originally formed in 2012, it wasn't until 2015 that Ruff Majik released their debut EP "The Bear" which led to some touring and recognition.

Fast forward to 2022 having built up a rockin back catalogue of music, a strong following and having achieved something most South African bands aspire to, touring Europe. Ruff Majik released their latest single "She's Still a Goth" on 28th October.

Johni and his wife's fascination with b-grade horror and gothic imagery has always been influential in the lyrical themes and overall image of the band. When Anni fell in love once more with 80's tinged gothic synthwave during the pandemic, it inspired him to write a tune in ode to her - featuring references to classic gothic imagery whilst still fitting neatly into the realm of Tarantino-esque desert rock. The track is the first single from their highly anticipated upcoming album Elektrik Ram, which drops in April 2023 via Mongrel Records.

  • Atomic Drive

On this episode Brian is joined by Floris from South African rock band Atomic Drive.

Atomic Drive is an original high-energy, melodic riff rock band from Cape Town, South Africa. Drawing influence from the likes of Audioslave, Guns n Roses and AC DC, the band was formed in 2019 by Floris le Roux (Vocals, Guitar), Steph Nortje (Drums) and Nick Kuiper (Bass, Backing Vocals). Since then, Atomic Drive has released numerous Music and Lyric Videos.

Following the release of their debut single "My Beautiful Life" the band received favorable reviews which led to them being booked for shows and festivals across South Africa. Sadly, the outbreak of COVID-19 and implementation of national lockdown hampered all further arrangements for these shows, with dates eventually cancelled shortly thereafter.

During lockdown, the band decided to focus on creating more music, resulting in the subsequent release of their second single in April 2020. “Face of My Enemy” was accompanied by a hauntingly artistic lyric video, quickly becoming a favourite, not only for Atomic Drive, but anyone who saw it. This would also turn out to be one of the last releases of the band with vocalist Jesse Jordan who immigrated to the UK with family. In honour of their time together, Atomic Drive had their last live performance with Jesse in October 2020.

The year 2021 was set to be a time to regroup for the band that had set out to find a replacement vocalist, auditioning many singers around Cape Town. The uncertainty of shows and future commitments that continued within the industry as a result of COVID-19 and the lack of finding a new vocalist resulted in the band taking time off to reorganize for the remainder of that year.

As the industry slowly started to recover in 2022, so did Atomic Drive after deciding to keep their vocals in-house, with Floris taking over as vocalist and Nick on backing vocals. Taking some rehearsal time with this new dynamic, the band fervently enjoyed the three-piece setup and decided to permanently keep the line-up as is.

Tune in to hear all about:

    The latest release "Wires"
