Jesus performs an amazing miracle, but he begins by using what the disciples have. What do we need to hand over to Jesus so that he can do with it as he desires?

So often, we will pray for something we want and then try to make it happen ourselves because we struggle to believe that Jesus will – or maybe even that Jesus can – help and answer us. If we really believed Jesus can do anything, what difference would that make in the worries we experience in this life?

It can sometimes be difficult to understand why Jesus does what he does. This was the case when Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. Peter struggled to understand how a man who was supposed to be an exalted teacher could submit himself to such a menial task. But understanding Jesus’ humility is key to understanding how Jesus saves us and how we are called to live for him and in service to others.

The most important question we can answer is this: Who is Jesus? When Jesus asks Peter this question, Peter responds by saying that Jesus is God’s king. If we answer the same way, what does Jesus’ kingship mean for how we live our lives?

The question that led to all of Jesus’ questions was a question Satan asked Adam and Eve: “Did God really say” (Genesis 3:1)? By getting them to question God’s goodness, they fell into what was bad for them and brought death into the world. On Ash Wednesday, we reflect on how our destiny in the dust began with a deceitful and dangerous question.
