Alexandra is a 2nd year student at University of Toronto and has been suffering from PCS (post concussion syndrome/persistent concussion symptoms/prolonged concussion symptoms) for 6 and a half years. Although she was forced to stop dancing, she has continued her love of performance by acting and singing in her room all the while trying to balance school, life, and her concussion symptoms. Alexa talks about her challenges and her questions about what the concussion and PCS could mean for her. An amazing talk!

On the second episode of BRAINIAC, Edina Bijvoet, president of the University of Toronto chapter of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, will interview Nicola Bijvoet, a University of Toronto Rotman Commerce student. Nicola sustained a concussion 5 months ago and is still experiencing symptoms. She has been maintaining an anti-inflammatory diet with the intention of improving her concussion symptoms. Her experience with the diet, as well as the relevant research is discussed. I completed Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin America) in 2014, but geography, along with other circumstances, mean that my exposure to Spanish is limited, and I'm far from fluent. Nevertheless, it was a great course, I learned a lot, it wouldn't take long to get up to speed, and at the very least it's not indecipherable.That brings me to Episode 71 where Dr. Alejandra Merriman and Oscar Lopez Huerta, LAT, ATC will talk about concussion and how the essential communication between the injured person and the Athletic Trainer. Communication is of the utmost importance; whether it's Spanish to English or English to Spanish, each party must fully understand the other. The complexity of a concussion injury alone can be overwhelming and difficult for individuals to understand, let alone monitoring the trajectory of their recovery that can include several practitioners.Dr Shannon Bauman, Medical Director of Concussion North, joins the podcast to discuss how she has used her personal experiences with concussion to build a new framework to encourage a collaborative, patient-centred care pathway. The Concussion Passport is a clinically-validated tool that empowers the patient and helps to harmonize a multi-disciplinary care team throughout the recovery process. As well, Dr Bauman shares her expertise on concussion recovery based on a database of over 700 patients from her clinical practice.

Subjective report of symptoms alone cannot characterize the underlying dysfunction in sensory processing and integration. The development of objective outcome measures will help improve clinical management of concussion.Meaghan joins Katie to discuss her on-going concussion research with York University and the Toronto Rehab Institute. As well, she discusses her career path from working on the sidelines to developing a passion for research and teaching the next generation of physiotherapists.
