  • Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum: The Names They Lost

Built on the belief that architecture itself could help heal the mind, West Virginia's Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was designed for just 250 patients. At its height, thousands may have lived behind its walls.

This episode of Condemned traces the institution from its ambitious beginnings through decades of overcrowding, violence, lobotomies, court intervention, and eventual closure. Along the way, we follow the surviving record—from Daniel Johnston's time at Weston to an 1877 killing documented by four signatures but remembered only through conflicting initials.

Today, the massive stone hospital survives as one of America's most famous paranormal attractions. But beneath the ghost stories is a more difficult question: Why do we know so much about the building, yet so little about many of the people who lived and died inside it?

  • Numbers Instead of Names: Pennhurst State School (Pennsylvania)

Pennhurst was built with a promise: to educate, protect, and care for people Pennsylvania had nowhere else to send. What followed was overcrowding, abuse, human experimentation, landmark court battles, and nearly eighty years of lives reduced to institutional records.

In the first episode of Condemned, Christopher Feinstein examines what happened inside Pennhurst, the people who survived it, the records left behind, and the ghost stories that eventually grew around its abandoned halls.

There are places we abandoned long before we abandoned the buildings.

Hospitals. Asylums. Orphanages. Sanatoriums. Institutions built to heal, shelter, educate—and sometimes simply hide the people society didn't know what to do with.

Each week, Condemned investigates one of these places, the people who lived there, and the stories left behind.

I'm Christopher Feinstein, and this is Condemned.
