If you’re not familiar, Mix Up Baking is a family-run vegan and allergen-free baking company based here in the Conejo Valley.

Heather started Mix Up Baking out of necessity when she discovered that her youngest son, Lennon, had severe food allergies. She struggled to find desserts that were both safe for him to eat and tasted great. So, she started making our own.

Cut to a year later, and you can now find their vegan muffins and cookies at local coffee shops like 507 and Longevity, as well as on their website Mix Up Baking.com. 

In our conversation, Heather shares about the scary hospital stay that inspired Mix Up Baking, what it’s like to run a food company from your home kitchen, and how important experimenting and then pivoting as needed has been for the growth of Mix Up Baking.

1: In today's episode - our first official episode!! - we’re talking to Luis Sanchez of Mouthful Eatery in Thousand Oaks. If you’re not familiar, Mouthful is the most delicious Peruvian restaurant in Conejo Valley and one of Yelp’s top 100 restaurants in the country. 

Luis’s story is just as interesting. As a kid in Lima, Peru, food was an important part of his childhood and cooking up his own creations sparked joy. While studying film in the US, Luis worked in various front of house positions at restaurants and bars in the LA area. It was during a job at a bar in Agoura where he was able to go back of house and design his own menu. A serious incident there underscored his decision to focus on cooking and went to pursue a degree at the Cordon Bleu. 

In our conversation, Luis shares the importance of a business plan, the value he places on the Conejo Valley community, and advice he has for anyone considering opening a restaurant.
