Nicola Horlick is one of the most recognisable figures in British finance. She managed £48 billion at Morgan Grenfell, was suspended in a very public scandal, flew to Frankfurt alone to confront Deutsche Bank, and somehow did all of this while raising six children — including a daughter, Georgie, who died of leukaemia aged 12.
In this episode of Confessions of a Successful Leader, Nicola talks openly about the decisions, setbacks and principles that shaped her — from an idyllic childhood on The Wirral, to Oxford, to the male-dominated City of the 1980s, to setting up her own businesses including her lending platform Money & Co.
She shares her views on the differences between a sponsor and a mentor, why she believes in meritocracy, what it felt like to grieve and build a business simultaneously, and why her advice to her teenage self is simply: aim high.
In this episode:
- Why Nicola chose the City over acting and journalism
- The power of having a sponsor (not just a mentor) in a big firm
- Being made the youngest ever director of Warburgs — from a hospital bedside
- The Morgan Grenfell scandal: suspension, the press pack, and the flight to Frankfurt
- Running a business from a hospital ward at Great Ormond Street
- Losing Georgie — and what came after
- The Madoff connection that wasn't (and why it still follows her)
- Moving to Guernsey and what's next for Money & Co
- Her charity work: Anthony Nolan and child poverty
Key quote: "My father really believed in me and always told me that I could achieve. Aim high."
