Off a rural road in Pasco County Florida sits what remains of a once-thriving grand botanical garden created by William Dupree. This Tampa Bay Attorney created this roadside tropical attraction in 1940 and more than 30,000 people paid admission to see it. I walked through the ruins and did some research to help understand what once stood here, just 100 or so yards away from a modern neighborhood.
Sybil Griffith has had an affiliation with Preston Castle since she was three years old. Her father took a job there when she was a child and today, Sybil works as an administrator and tour guide. I had a chance to interview Sybil for Phantom History and she had some incredible insight into the building’s history and use, the conditions that the wards endured while there and a few stories about the unexpected encounters she has had.
