A 16-year-old girl, McKenna Keltz got an opportunity to represent the American United Methodist Church at a youth summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Global Young People's Convocation brings more than 300 people from 40 countries to talk about the future of the church.

For the 16-year-old DuBois Area High School junior, young people belonging to organizations and traveling the world is important.

She said that the Convocation gave her a chance to meet people from different countries who all had the same goals in mind.

For five days, Keltz was as much an event worker as a delegate. She helped speakers prepare, coordinated with bands, attended meetings, and even worked with the group to develop legislation to be sent to the United Methodist General Conference in 2019.

Loud noises, even if you only are exposed to them for a short time, can cause hearing loss and trauma. Dr. Peg Armanini goes over some of the ways of preventing that loss and what to do after the trauma happens.

For kindergarteners starting their first day of school this year in Brockway, there’s a unique opportunity this August… something they’re calling a “Friendraiser.”

The Brockway Education Foundation is hosting a “Friendraiser” in hopes that it will alleviate some of the nervousness of meeting friends in kindergarten for the first time.

Lisa Rutherford from the Foundation explained that the Friendraiser is a free pool party for the Class of 2031 and their parents. It will be at the pool at Taylor Memorial Park from 10 a.m. to noon on August 18.

Give the gift of life on Aug. 1, 2018. Danonewave in DuBois is partnering with the American Red Cross for a blood drive, this Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Tour de Varacallo is a way of remembering Dr. Albert Varacallo who died in 2010 at the age of 52 when a vehicle struck his bike. His wife, Luanne, explains that it’s a way of keeping his spirit alive and continuing the good work that he did in the community.

Results are in for the winners of the 2018 Tour de Varacallo, an 18-mile bike race through DuBois, Sandy and Union Townships to honor an influential doctor from the area.

The Tour de Varacallo is a way of remembering Dr. Albert Varacallo who died in 2010 at the age of 52 when a vehicle struck his bike.

He had been a physician in our area for many years and was known for his generosity and volunteer work.
