  • Andrew Green on The $155B Data Centre Boom & AI Infrastructure | Connected The Podcast Ep. 6

Australia’s $155 Billion Data Centre Boom: Can We Build Fast Enough? Australia’s data centre boom is accelerating, driven by artificial intelligence, cloud computing and unprecedented demand for digital infrastructure. But can Australia build the power, workforce and infrastructure needed to keep up?In this episode of Connected Conversations, Emma Bedford speaks with Andrew Green of AG Squared Consulting about the future of data centres in Australia and New Zealand, the growth of AI infrastructure and what this rapidly expanding sector means for construction and capital works.

Andrew breaks down the difference between traditional colocation facilities and enormous hyperscale data centres, why Australia has become a major destination for global data centre investment, and why access to power, land, skilled workers and faster approvals will determine which projects actually get built. They explore the biggest challenges facing the sector, including data centre energy consumption, renewable energy, water usage, liquid cooling, grid infrastructure and the pressure AI is placing on data centre design.

The conversation also looks at the construction opportunity. With major projects requiring huge workforces across electrical, mechanical and traditional trades, data centres could create long-term careers extending from construction into operations and maintenance.

Andrew also explains why these 25-year assets need to adapt to technology that can become outdated within just a few years, and why designing for flexibility is now critical.

They discuss:• AI and hyperscale data centre growth• Data centre construction in Australia• Renewable energy and electricity demand• Water usage and sustainable cooling• Construction workforce shortages• AI, GPUs and high-density computing• Designing data centres for future technology• Jobs and opportunities across the data centre sector

  • Peter Colacino on The Profitless Boom & Insolvency Risk | Connected The Podcast Ep. 5

"Australia is entering one of the biggest construction booms in history... but it's a profitless boom." In the fifth episode of our 'State of the Nation' series, Emma Bedford and Connected Construction Manager Simon Bugg sit down with Peter Colacino, CEO of the Australian Constructors Association (ACA).Despite a historic pipeline of mega-projects across data centers, defense, and infrastructure, the construction industry is facing a crisis. With the sector accounting for over 26% of all insolvencies in Australia and a massive shortfall of skilled labor, something has to change. Designed for C-suite leaders, property directors, and capital planning executives, this episode unpacks the structural reforms needed to protect your projects from contractor collapse. In this episode, we cover:The Profitless Boom: Why record levels of investment are clashing with razor-thin margins, global supply chain shocks, and an industry squeeze. The Insolvency Crisis: How adversarial contracts, poor risk allocation, and cash flow bottlenecks have pushed major contractors to the brink, and why clients ultimately pay the price. The Labor Shortfall: Navigating the 300,000-worker deficit and the incredible strain hyperscale data centers are placing on specific trades (like a projected shortage of 70,000 electricians).Procurement Reform: Moving away from a "race to the bottom" bidding process and establishing mature affordability envelopes.Modern Methods of Construction (MMC): Overcoming the construction sector's scandalous lack of digital uptake. The Culture Standard: Shifting the industry's approach to working hours, psychosocial safety, and creating a sustainable career path that retains talent.🎙️ Timestamps:00:00 - Cold Open: The Profitless Boom01:03 - Introduction & Meet Peter Colacino03:03 - The Role of the Australian Constructors Association (ACA)04:18 - State of the Sector: Unprecedented Booms & The Profit Squeeze06:06 - The 300,000 Worker Shortfall & Localized Constraints08:01 - Data Centers & The Massive Electrician Shortage10:48 - Retaining Talent: Career Pathways & Industry Stickiness12:47 - The Insolvency Crisis: Grocon, ProBuild & The Domino Effect16:07 - Commercial Maturity: How Clients Can Mitigate Insolvency Risk20:04 - Moving From Adversarial Contracts to Aligned Incentives21:44 - The Future of Construction: MMC & Digital Uptake25:01 - Why Clients Hesitate to Adopt Innovation28:03 - Procurement: Is the System Selecting for Failure?32:00 - Fixing Commercial Terms & Standard Contracts34:36 - The Exciting Reality of Building the Nation38:36 - From the Tools to Project Management: Industry Pathways40:06 - The Culture Standard: Time for Life & Psychosocial Safety43:29 - Optimism for the Future: National Reforms & Mega-Projects47:17 - Closing RemarksAbout Connected Global:We bring smarter thinking, technical expertise, and real-world experience together to simplify complexity and deliver with certainty. • Seven Sites Into One: Building Australia’s Largest Food Testing Laboratory

What does it take to consolidate seven operating locations into one purpose-built, future-ready facility without disrupting critical services?

In this episode of Connected Conversations, host Emma and Connected Workplaces Construction Manager Simon Bugg are joined by Kerry Russell, Managing Director of Mérieux NutriSciences AQ, to unpack the journey behind a new 10,000-square-metre food testing laboratory in West Melbourne.

Described in the episode as Australia’s largest food testing facility, the project was much more than a construction job. It was a major business transformation involving seven Victorian sites, complex laboratory operations, changing workplace behaviours, significant authority delays, a shareholder transition and a detailed business continuity plan.

Kerry explains how bringing employees together created new opportunities for collaboration, operational efficiency and career development. The team designed the facility around lean laboratory principles, efficient workflows, safe access, employee wellbeing and a campus-style workplace that people would be proud to call their own.

The conversation also explores the realities of delivering a major capital works project while continuing to run a time-critical food testing business. From temporary generator power and unexpected soil conditions to moving employees and samples interstate, the project demanded resilience, strong governance and transparent communication.

Kerry shares the simple philosophy that helped the team manage the pressure: focus on the challenge directly in front of you. Like facing a fast bowler, you cannot become distracted by the tenth over when the next ball is already on its way.

With over 20 years of experience as a quantity surveyor specialising in complex health and life sciences facilities, Barry breaks down the financial realities of today's construction market.

For the last three years, the industry has been consumed by noise surrounding inflation, labor shortages, and supply chain volatility. This conversation cuts through that noise. Designed specifically for C-suite leaders, property directors, and capital planning executives, this episode provides a realistic look at how to structure robust business cases and share risk collaboratively. In this episode, we cover:

    • Cost Escalation Realities: Why acute services building costs jumped from $6,000/sqm to over $12,500/sqm post-COVID, and how global instability is causing hyper-escalation spikes.
    • Procurement Evolution: The critical shift away from adversarial, hard-dollar lump-sum contracts toward Early Contractor Involvement (ECI).
    • Labor Market Capability: Why the industry isn't just facing a headcount issue, but a critical capability and fatigue challenge across competing sectors.
    • AI & Automation: How Tier-1 contractors are actually using technology for forecasting, modular coordination, and safety—rather than just hype.
