  • Tech Tonics: Craig Lipset – Patient-Centric Before It Was Cool
As a boy, Craig Lipset thought he wanted to become a doctor – but over time, he came to appreciate that his real interest was, as he put it, engaging in the spirit of medicine at the population level – a pursuit that ultimately brought him to the forefront of digital health at Pfizer, establishing a capability long before most pharmas even recognized they needed it. Craig grew up in the distinct cultural milieu that is the North Shore of Long Island. A middle child with an interest in music and medicine, he attended Brandeis, where he majored in music, took pre-med classes, and worked for an EMS service in Waltham, MA. In 1992 he returned to New York, and obtained an MPH at Columbia, and discovered he loved thinking about populations, and wanted to learn more about the organizations helping to study them. After graduation in 1998, he considered consulting, but instead joined a contract research organization, Parexel and worked closely with Dr. Mark Goldberg, who would go on to become the President and COO. He eventually left Parexel to join a VC-backed company in Waltham that was ultimately acquired by Bristol Myers Squibb. At around this time, Craig’s life changed dramatically and unexpectedly when he was diagnosed with pulmonary sarcoidosis. He decided to make a life change, so he returned to the New York area and joined Pfizer in 2006, where he would stay for eleven years. Craig built their clinical innovation program from a footnote to a core business capability. Within a year of joining Pfizer, Craig began to apply his personal experience as an e-patient and was designing the industry’s first fully at-home decentralized clinical trial – the Pfizer REMOTE study. During his tenure, Pfizer — along with the rest of the industry –would increasingly begin to appreciate the value of digital and the opportunity for patient-centricity that Craig had been championing so passionately for years. Today, Craig serves as an independent adviser, sharing his experience, expertise, and learnings with biopharma companies, startups, and investors.

  • IDC’s Kitty Fok: Part 2 – In the Wake of COVID-19, Opportunities for ICT in China
For decades “Made in China” has generally meant, to the Western world at least, mass produced cheap goods. But the strategic plan “Made in China 2025” established by Premier Li Qekiang aims to move the country into making high value, high tech products in fields like robotics and automation, computer chips, aerospace and biomedical research. And that has meant an investment in things like the Internet of Things, AI and cloud. It just so happens that when the coronavirus pandemic broke out, China’s high-tech resources, like its current cloud capabilities, were quickly reoriented to fighting the spread of the disease. This is the second part of a conversation with Kitty Fok, Managing Director of IDC, China, who recently authored the report, “Impact of COVID-19 on China’s Economy and ICT Market.” Follow the enterprise cloud tech revolution at The Forecast by Nutanix.

  • COVID-19’s Impact on the Tech Industry in China
The coronavirus pandemic jolted economies and businesses around the world. Immediately experts reported on signs of destruction and offered examples of recovery. In a three-part series, Kitty Fok, Managing Director of IDC, China, explains findings from her annual report, which showed China’s economy in the first quarter of 2020 fell 6.8% compared to Q1 2019. She said this is the first time China’s economy shrank since the government began sharing that data almost three decades ago. In this first segment, Fok tells how the technology industry in China was impacted by COVID-19. She describes how tech was adopted to fight the virus, how usage patterns are changing and how manufacturing supply chains will need to become more resilient. In the second part, Fok covers changes expected to occur around enterprise IT, including the proliferation of cloud computing and hybrid cloud-powered data centers. In the third part of this series, Fok talks about the industries that will come out of the COVID-19 crisis stronger. Follow the enterprise cloud tech revolution at The Forecast by Nutanix.

  • Tech Unlocking the Future of Work
During this shelter-in-place, there have been many feel-good moments of people collaborating with each other whether it’s working from home or personal stuff like having a Zoom party on doing online wine tastings. One of the unexpected story gems was the National Football League draft, in which general managers and coaches—who normally put in insane office hours, their families hardly see them—they drafted players from their homes and it was was shared it publicly, live, often with their kids and the family dog in the room. It went so well, some sports pundits said, this is how it ought to be done going forward. There is a strong sentiment among experts that COVID-19 revealed that empowering employees to work remotely is a good business strategy. In this Tech Barometer segment, Marker Bowker, senior analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group shares his insights about digital workspace and the technologies and practices that are shaping the future of work. • Developing a Robust, Sustainable Merger and Acquisition Process
IT Best Practices: A robust merger and acquisition (M&A) process (which also applies to divestures) is a growing aspect of Intel’s business. But there is nothing simple about evaluating and integrating technologies and business capabilities or supporting incoming employees. IT organizations must use their experience to focus on the following areas: Security and privacy. Cybersecurity and privacy pose a particular risk to the value of M&A before, during, and after closing the deal. Integration. Understanding new business capabilities and the challenges of data harmonization are necessary to developing a phased and prioritized approach. Technical debt. Existing systems are not phased out overnight and must be maintained until integration is cost e?ective and/or necessary. At Intel, we have a dedicated IT M&A team that does more than execute on deals. We participate in due diligence discovery, planning, and integration to help Intel secure greater business value, and sometimes highlight potential unforeseen costs. We use an M&A lifecycle process to approach each deal with guiding principles of putting employees, suppliers, and the business value first. The IT M&A team advocates across IT to help deliver customized, secure, and cost-e?ective solutions, and brings expertise in its operating model, strategy, and capabilities. We are accountable for aligning IT capabilities and business processes, and our robust professional network brings a cohesive approach to each deal. Divestures—or separation programs—can be as challenging as acquisitions. They are largely dictated by the buyer’s integration plan, giving us much less control. When planning a divesture, we use the following: Mission critical (Pre-sign). This is what must be in place at or immediately after close. It requires a full assessment of the IT footprint being divested, transition services agreements (TSAs), partner and commercial agreement alignment, and working with the buyer to develop a “Day 1” plan. Initial separation (Close/Day 1). These are initial separation activities, such as removing separated employees from IT systems, exporting relevant data, physically moving people, putting TSAs and commercial support in place, and updating IT systems to re?ect sold inventory. inal separation (Day 2). This is the final separation of IT capabilities, such as extracting deal-relevant data from all remaining systems, terminating TSAs, and cleaning up connectivity, assets, and so on. M&A is not simple, but in today’s business it is increasingly more common. While many organizations outsource this work, at Intel we have achieved great success by forming a dedicated IT M&A team that handles due diligence as well as integration. With a consistent M&A lifecycle process, we have built years of experience in evaluating, prioritizing, planning, and executing the integration of incoming organizations and the separation of divestures. Cybersecurity is a particularly risky area as breaches can result in unforeseen costs, and even devaluation of the deal. Our planned approach brings a clearer understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and risks that help us add value to the business and ease the transition for employees
