How do you change an entrenched political system?

This is the first conversation in our Nigeria Series — a sustained diagnosis of Nigeria's contemporary political and economic challenges, organised around two questions that will run through every session: how did we get here, and how do we move from here?

In this foundational episode, Olemo Gordon Brian sits down with Godson Kelly Nwankwo — political education advocate and founder of the Policy Advocacy and Leadership Fellowship — to lay the groundwork for the series. They examine the leadership pipeline problem in Nigeria: the fellowships and programmes preparing young people for public service, what they are doing well, and what they are structurally incapable of doing. They interrogate the ideology of accommodation and survival — how Nigeria's political elite targets vocal young people with appointments, neutralises their voices, and absorbs them into the system they set out to challenge. They discuss the difference between patriotism and blind loyalty to the status quo, between anger and clear-eyed political organisation, and between protest and power. And they ask the question that sits underneath all of it: if Nigeria achieved a regime change tomorrow, do the next set of leaders actually have what it takes?

This series is not interested in a catalogue of Nigeria's problems for their own sake. It is interested in the underlying structures — the political culture, the economic class formations, the institutional arrangements — that produced the Nigeria we see today, and what a clear-eyed diagnosis actually demands of the generation that has to move the country forward.

What informs the form and content of Uganda's political parties — and how did we get here?

In this session of the Ideological College Uganda series, Olemo Gordon Brian, Surumani Manzi, and Twahiirwa Asiimwe conduct a historical analysis of the political party as a phenomenon in Uganda. They begin with the origins of party formation in the colonial period — from Ignatius Musaazi's farmers' associations and the Uganda National Congress, through the formations of the UPC, DP, and Kabaka Yekka — and ask why Uganda, unlike most of the continent, never produced a single national liberation movement. They examine why the violent anti-colonial struggle forges national consciousness in ways that negotiated independence cannot, the role of elites in party formation, the personalist character of Ugandan political parties, and whether the NRM's movement system was a genuine political innovation or simply a vehicle for consolidating power. They close with the question that Uganda cannot avoid: what happens to the country after Museveni?

In this second session of the Ideological College Uganda series, Olemo Gordon Brian and Surumani Manzi turn to class as a tool of political analysis — asking whether Marxist categories of bourgeoisie and proletariat are even useful for understanding African societies that never went through the historical stages that produced them in Europe. They argue that Africa is not an infant Europe, and that applying European class analysis uncritically to Uganda distorts more than it reveals.

From there the conversation gets grounded. Manzi draws on his travels across Uganda — from Mbarara to Lira, from Kasese to Moroto — to show how the structural inequalities of the country map onto its political geography. They examine the slow transfer of wealth from the peasantry to a crony capitalist class through the mechanics of structural adjustment, how the privatisation of education and healthcare has driven peasant families to sell land across generations, the black tax trap that keeps the educated middle class from accumulating wealth, and the identity crisis of a middle class caught between the village and the aspiration of bourgeois life.

Why do Africa's liberation movements all seem to end up in the same place?

In this conversation, Olemo Gordon Brian and Surumani Manzi anchor a discussion of Liam Taylor's essay — The Eighteenth Brumaire of Yoweri Museveni, published in the Review of African Political Economy (ROAPE) — on the broader question of why national liberation movements across Africa have failed to deliver the transformations they promised. From the NRM in Uganda to the ANC in South Africa, ZANU-PF in Zimbabwe, and CCM in Tanzania, the pattern is the same: radical rhetoric, genuine early achievements, and then a slow retreat into neoliberalism, patronage politics, and the consolidation of power.

They ask whether Museveni was ever a genuine revolutionary or simply a very lucky actor who read the conditions well. They examine what Uganda achieved and what it failed to deliver. In this second part of The Great Text Series discussion on Peter Ekeh's "Colonialism and the Two Publics in Africa", Olemo Gordon Brian and Surumani Manzi take the conversation from diagnosis to debate.

They interrogate the African bourgeoisie — arguing that it is not fundamentally different from the European bourgeoisie in character, only in its inability to externalise exploitation the way Europe did through colonialism. They examine why the European nation state developed organically while African states were manufactured by force — and what that difference means for political morality today. They trace the deliberate colonial policy, documented by Mamdani in "Citizen and Subject", of balkanizing African populations to prevent the formation of a unified national middle class — and ask what it would take to reverse it.

The conversation arrives at a question Africa cannot avoid: are we our tribal identities or our manufactured nations? Are we Ugandans or are we Langi, Baganda, Acholi? And if neither of those identities is working, is the Pan-African project — a continental identity rooted in shared race, shared history, and shared grievance — the only way out?

Why does a civil servant who would never steal from his hometown association feel no guilt at all stealing from the public purse? Why do voters demand that their elected representative attend every funeral and wedding in the constituency — and punish them at the ballot if they do not? Why does every new government, however clean its record, end up behaving just like the one before it?

In this first episode of The Great Text Series, Olemo Gordon Brian unpacks Peter Ekeh's landmark 1975 essay, "Colonialism and the Two Publics in Africa" — one of the most important and enduring tools of analysis in African political sociology.

Ekeh's argument is deceptively simple: colonialism did not just exploit Africa economically. It created a unique moral configuration — two publics, not one. The primordial public of kinship, clan, and ethnicity, where moral obligation reigns and you give without expecting anything back. And the civic public of the state, inherited from colonialism, which is seen as alien, illegitimate, and there to be exploited. Africans do not relate to these two publics the same way — and that asymmetry is at the root of what we call corruption, ethnic voting, patronage politics, and the failure of elections alone to change anything.

Olemo traces this framework through contemporary examples in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa — and closes with the question that matters most for our generation: what does it actually take to build a new relationship between the African citizen and the African state?

A February 2018 speech by Trevor Lwere delivered during the African Leadership Academy (ALA)'s Decennial Celebrations.

More than five years later, this speech remains foundational to us. Trevor makes a forceful case against political apathy and argues that even if we do not take an interest in politics, politics will always take an interest in us. He challenges young Africans to resist the comforts and conveniences that often make disengagement attractive, and instead embrace the obligations that come with citizenship and leadership.

Positioning our generation within a broader historical struggle, Trevor reminds us that to be young and African is to be a hopeful revolutionary — hopeful in the promise of tomorrow and in our collective ability to transform the continent into a peaceful and prosperous one.

Why does the South African left keep losing — not to the right, but to itself?

Is Africa's pursuit of development a rigged game — or is the problem simply that we have not learned the right lessons?

In this conversation, Olemo Gordon Brian is joined by Trevor Lwere, Surumani Manzi, and Thomas Lesaffre to engage Trevor's undergraduate thesis on Africa's experiences with modernisation. Together they interrogate why development has remained elusive to African states — examining both the socialist experiment of Ujamaa in Tanzania and the neoliberal experiment in Uganda — and why both paths led to the same dead end.

Trevor introduces his concept of development by permission — the argument that the countries that broke out of underdevelopment did so not through superior policy, but because the geopolitical interests of global powers aligned to grant them the critical factors of development: capital, technology, and market access. He then goes further, drawing on Fanon, to interrogate not just the feasibility but the desirability of modernity as the organising logic of African development.
