How does the term obesity affect people living in fat bodies?
What are the origins of fatphobia?
What are the ways that diet culture keeps women from embracing their power?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Dr. Marianne Miller, an eating disorder specialist, regarding diet culture, feminism, and the patriarchy. They discuss how racism and intersectionality lead to the development of ‘fat phobia’, which has been used to control how women view themselves and their worth. Dr. Miller shared how she works to help women reclaim their connection to their body and intuition.
Dr. Miller has been in the mental health field for 25 years and has specialized in eating disorders for the last 10 years. She was a full-time academic for 12 years and had a part-time eating disorder practice for much of that time until she left the university and went into private practice full-time in 2018. Dr. Miller loves working with eating disorders, and she takes a non-diet, feminist approach that helps people of all genders live empowered, authentic lives. She embraces the Health at Every Size model, and she is LGBTQIAA+ affirming.

What is the importance and impact of a multicultural upbringing?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Kelly Hurst, an anti-racist disruptor and equity strategist. They discuss the importance of being vulnerable and naming mistakes or the ways one has perpetuated systemic racism in order to dismantle it. Hurst explains how dominant culture paved the way for white women to become a danger to society and how it affects people who “look white” being included or excluded from the concept of conditional whiteness.
After spending 23 years in the public education system as a teacher, literacy coach, guidance dean, and assistant principal, Kelly witnessed firsthand how the system helped white students thrive while continuing to marginalize Black students. As a result, Kelly left the education system and started Being Black at School. Kelly is best known as the author of the award-winning blog Mocha Momma, where she chronicles her life as a former teen parent, a birth mom, and a single mother who took her then 3-year old daughter to college with her. Kelly will serve as the founder and executive officer of Being Black at School.

Have you ever felt shame about your body, particularly when something’s not quite right in your female or male sexual organs? How has the patriarchy perpetuated this shame and led to disparities in Black women’s health, and what can be done about it?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill discusses her own experiences with shame around women’s health issues, the way the patriarchy perpetuates silence and shame around women’s bodies and women’s health, and how that can lead to adverse health outcomes in our healthcare system for women and, in particular, Black women.
She discusses the way that racism and bias are baked into the healthcare system, and the importance of healthcare professionals recognizing and owning their biases in order to reverse the inequities in healthcare. She also talks about the concept of intersectionality, a term coined by Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw, and how that impacts how a person may experience bias and oppression.

What is the increasing importance of rebuilding a new way of doing business and relating to each other? Can one group of people gain benefits without taking from another group?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Patricia Ramirez Pinckney, founder of The U.S. Latino Cultural Competence Institute. They discuss how Latinos are no longer a niche market and are now seen as ambicultural, unifiers, and mainstream in the US. Patricia explains what we’re missing about cultural diversity in our own country. She highlights the importance of people feeling like themselves and being understood at work, in order to demonstrate unity and inclusiveness by example (and not just speaking about platitudes).
Patricia is also a co-founder of RIMA Strategy and Marketing, which provides C-level “big company” strategy to medium and growth-stage ventures. As a multicultural Latina fluent in English and Spanish, Patricia crosses cultural boundaries to effectively collaborate with stakeholders of diverse backgrounds and mindsets. This ability, together with a solid quantitative base developed from years of analyzing data, serve as the foundation for successful acculturated strategies to reach multiple audiences in today’s multicultural markets.
