In Luke 11:29-32 we see the crowd demanding a sign from Jesus, but He refuses, promising only to give them the sign of Jonah: just as Jonah was three days in the belly of the whale before preaching in Ninevah, Jesus would be three days in the belly of the earth and then rise from the grave. It was not the sign they expected and demanded, but it was a sign that would be infinitely more wonderful, proving His power over death and sin and His perfect fulfillment of the Father's divine plan of redemption.
