One of the greatest struggles that plagued the early church was the teaching of the Judaizers. They believed that for a person to be saved, they had to come under and be obedient to all the tenants of the Mosaic Law. In this text, we see the early church grappling with this question and coming to the determination that salvation is not by works of the law, but by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

Once the Jerusalem council had decided that Gentiles did not have to come under the Mosaic Law in order to be saved, they now had to communicate their decision to the churches. They selected Judas Barsabbas and Silas to accompany Paul and Barnbas back to Antioch and deliver a letter to the congregation there. As the Gentiles received this letter, the rejoiced at the goodness of God and hungered all the more to receive teaching about Christ and salvation.

The Prototypical Judge; Judges 3:7-11; February 22, 2026; Robert Gardner

On the day of the final judgement, Christ will sit on His glorious throne and He will separate believers from unbelievers just like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. How will we be judged? Christ says it is on the basis of whether or not we have shown compassion to His people. It is not that we earn our salvation by being compassionate, but rather, our compassion is evidence that we have truly been transformed by grace through faith in Christ. Are you a compassionate believer?

What happens when godly people can't agree? In this text, Paul and Barnabas have a falling out that is so severe that they decide to part ways. What we learn from them is that even the best Christians are still not perfect on this side of eternity, and yet God, in His wisdom and loving providence, works redemptively to further His purpose and accomplish the unity of His people.

As Paul and Silas returned to Lystra to check on the church and inform them of the Jerusalem council's decision, Paul was led to recruit Timothy to join them on their missionary journey. In this sermon, we explore the importance of passing on the faith to the next generation of believers, specifically giving 2 charges. The first is to young people to not waste their youth in pursuance to the things of the world. The second is to adults to take up the responsibility to mentor the next generation.
