Flavius Josephus wrote in the 2nd century, "There were till then left the race of giants, who had bodies so large, and countenances so entirely different from other men, that they were surprising to the sight.....the bones of these men are still shown to this very day, unlike any creditable relations to other men."
* Giants in the UK
The 16th century scribe, Raphael Holinshed, wrote in “Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland,” that Britain’s oldest acknowledged name was taken from a prehistoric king named Albion, who ruled a race of giants that dominated the UK for hundreds, possibly thousands of years B.C.
So what have they got to do with London?
One of the legends of Gog and Magog explicitly concerns London. As with most legends, there are variations on the theme, but a popular one goes that Gog and Magog (or confusingly Magog and Cornelius) were two monstrous giants, the product of the 33 wicked daughters of Roman emperor Diocletian and certain demons they'd been canoodling with. As he founded New Troy (which would become London), the heroic Brutus tamed the two colossi, forcing them to serve as guardians of the city by chaining them outside his palace, the site of which is now Guildhall. Of course, the tale is nonsense, but somehow the legend lived on, and the duo continued to be associated as the city's guardians. The effigies of 'Gogmagog the Albion' and 'Corineus the Britain' were recorded as appearing at the coronation of Elizabeth I in 1558 (where exactly, it isn't clear), while the giants were already making appearances at the Lord Mayor's Show by 1554.
* Greek mythology
The giants were known to be strong and aggressive and were known for their battle with the Olympian gods called the Gigantomachy. There are many detailed accounts of this battle. Famous Greek giants include Enceladus, who was killed by Athena; Polybotes, who was crushed by an island by Poseidon; and Porphyrion, who attempted to violate Hera and then was killed by Zeus and Heracles. The Greek historian, Herodutus, wrote about the 10 foot long (7 cubits long) body of Orestes being uncovered by Spartans.
* Norse mythology
In Norse mythology, the giants were often in conflict with the gods. The gods created the giants by many marriages. Norse mythology states that men were born from the flesh of a giant giant, Ymir. In the apocalypse battle of Ragnarok, according the Norse mythology, the giants are supposed to defeat the gods and bring about the end of the world as we know it.
* Native American mythology
Several Native American tribes, including the Navajo, the Comanches, the Choctaw from present-day Tennessee, the Manta people of Peru, and the Paiutes of Nevada have passed down stories describing a warlike race of white giants who were eventually wiped out. Some tribes report they were destroyed by the gods who were disgusted with their sexual habits or because they became too proud and unjust, and some report their warring with people and being extinguished.
* Hindu mythology
A race of giants known as the Daityas fought against the gods out of jealousy.
