Constant Procession

Part 4 is the final installment and recognizes October 26, 2025 as the 200th anniversary of the grand opening of the Erie Canal!

This is a special documentary I produced on the history of the Erie Canal 25 years ago with updates from 2025 and how it brought me closer to the Virgin Mary.

During my movie shoots for over 25 years I continue to discover as I traveled to parts of New York State unknown to me, that I've found the Virgin Mary is always here.

Part 4 is the conclusion to the series. It was shot last spring and brings to light what has happened across the Erie Canal since that documentary I produced 25 years ago.

I call this part "From Forgotten Wonder to Destination Wonder" because it reveals where two and a half decades now finds us.

Today, this is the story of positive growth. Of volunteers within their local communities bringing an understanding of canal history and canal usage for our times while growing opportunities for people to enjoy the Erie Canal today and in the future.

And now a day this is beginning to include what we have learned about the past that's not so great.

Not in an effort to rewrite history, but rather to address what has been overlooked in order to heal wounds and take account for those mistakes in order to learn from them and not repeat them as humanity grows into the future.

Here is the beginning of the story:

A big part of America's history almost never got built. Its builders ignored presidential advice, risked millions of dollars, and changed the course of America's society by building a ditch.

Work was begun in 1817 and completed in only seven years on October 26, 1825.

October 25, 1825, the beginning of a week-long event celebration that would be matched only by the ending of World Wars, Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic, and the celebration of man's first setting foot on the moon.

The story continues with the person who took responsibility for moving the canal from a pipe dream into the waterway it is today, 200 years later.

Someone had to step up in a leadership position, and that man was DeWitt Clinton.

As mayor of New York City, Clinton was an innovator. His contributions to the city were ahead of their times. His ability to develop and implement ideas have marked the landscape of both the city and the country.

He was to become immortalized for his work on the Erie Canal.

Part 1- This is the first of four installments of a special Constant Procession miniseries series to celebrate the 200th year of the Erie Canal and how my creation of a documentary about the canal brought me closer to the Virgin Mary.

During the movie shoots over a 5-year period I discovered that as I traveled to parts of New York State unknown to me, I found the Virgin Mary was always there.

I became more sensitive to the real nature of her presence and I've continued to find her as I go on my overseas travels.

Part 1 covers the reasons for the need of a canal in the early years of the United States of America. And the episode ends with the person responsible for making the project happen.

Here is the beginning of the story:

A big part of America's history almost never got built. Its builders ignored presidential advice, risked millions of dollars, and changed the course of America's society by building a ditch.

Work was begun in 1817 and completed in only seven years. But it was not simply a matter of digging a few trenches to link one river to a second and a third and so on.

This was a man-made ditch, four feet deep, the height of an average car, and 40 feet wide, the width of a four-lane highway, 363 miles long, running almost the entire length of New York State, from East in Albany to West in Buffalo.

Ukrainian churches during the times of the USSR were kept alive thru immigrants to North America.

NOTE: These final chapters were written before the current war between the Ukraine and Russia broke out.

The time period I wrote about began in 1922 when the Ukraine was totally controlled by the USSR.

In 1991, the USSR broke into the numerous independent countries that included the Ukraine.

Russia became the most powerful country in the region and at that point in time.

Chapter 28 continues to describe this earlier time period when Ukrainian churches were under siege during the times of the USSR's religious suppression. However, it was Ukrainian Immigrants to North America who kept them going during this suppression.

The final chapter is about apparition sites where the Virgin Mary has appeared. They offer hope for a timeless mode of being for those in the constant procession...

Medjugorje, does not come to mind as a vacation spot. But it has inspired visiting pilgrims to spread the Madonna's words.

For young people, who have not lived more than thirty years, this area of the world is typically not on their radar.

For those who have lived a bit longer, there remains a dark mental imprint. A remembrance that recalls brutality inflicted on people within this region as they experienced civil war in the 1990's. Fighting caused by the breaking up of Yugoslavia.

For me, the news reporting during that period of the civil war did little to help explain the confusing jumble of puzzling information that ominously included atrocities, genocide and war crimes.

Yet this area is where the Madonna appeared. She offered to the world a surprising counterpoint to humanities deeds. It's amazing to me that even during that civil war, pilgrims from around the world continued to converge on Medjugorje, which seemed to be located in the middle of the warfare.

The Virgin Mary appears at Medjugorje in Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herzegovina) in June 1981. Her earliest messages reinforce Gospel teachings by Christ on ways to live:

"Love God and Neighbors, Faith, Prayer and Fasting."

"These are how a person can 'return to God' and enjoy the 'fullness of life."

Meanwhile a Pope and a President find renewed clarity of purpose as they recover from assassination attempts and continue to live on the 'pointy edge of the sword.'

The Communist Governments in Poland and East Germany become the focus of their attention.

Time Magazine's proclaims 'God is Dead.' Situations around the world seem to prove it. Riots across the USA over the Vietnam War and Racial Injustice… A '6-Day War' in the Middle East. This history seems strangely current.

Chapter 23-A Society Without God. Soviet demands include citizens watching each other and a banning of freedoms, suppressing liberty and banning Bibles.

Chapter 24- Hot Pursuit in a Cold War- "The Great Return" found fierce resistance in France. In Hungary however, the procession yielded fruit.

By the end of WWI, among those who died on the battlefields were the best and brightest of that generation. This suddenly created a vacuum of natural leaders across the world.

Nihilism followed and brought on the attitude that "anything goes." The "Roaring Twenties" became the "Great Depression" that became WWII.

But then, a Marian apparition from long ago brought hope through a phenomenon known as "Our Lady of the Great Return" in France during that horrific war.

It brought people hope and became an 'endless procession' as people marched behind a very special statue of the Virgin Mary across France.
