CONSTELLATION: Circuit episodes

  • The Address Book That Forgets: How DNS Works, and Why It Fails

Before your browser fetches a single byte, it asks a question: where is this name? Circuit follows the step the pilot skipped, the Domain Name System. We walk the lookup (stub, recursive resolver, root, top-level domain, authoritative server) and the caching and TTL clocks that make it fast and fragile. A clearly labelled composite field story shows a routine Friday change splitting one name into two truths. Then the public record: Facebook's own account of its October 2021 outage, when its DNS servers became unreachable while still running. The design question: when we make names fast and cheap, who sees the stale answer longest? Takeaway: before blaming the Wi-Fi, ask whether it is the name or the place.
