Contact Sport at 44: Why Compete When You’re Too Old?

Listen Later

At nearly 44 years old, I’m preparing for my 33rd season of Rugby League. Not in a master’s or social comp, but in a full-contact, open-age first grade competition against players in their teens, 20s and 30s. This episode breaks down the reality of continuing to compete at that level. Not just physically, but mentally and logistically, while balancing family, business and life. There’s a bit on the training preparation required and recovery, but more importantly this is about challenging the stigma around playing sport in your 30s and 40s and asking a simple question…why stop if you’re still able? I dive into the benefits of team sport beyond fitness, accountability, discipline, connection and being part of something bigger than yourself. It also touches on mental health, purpose, leadership and the importance of role modelling for your kids. Showing through actions, not words, that you’re never too old to keep competing, improving and getting after it.
