Much to the surprise of a world that had reviled them barely two years earlier, South Africa were the darlings of the 1992 World Cup. The apartheid regime was dying on its feet, and a new vibrant nation was emerging from its shadows, epitomised by such young guns as Allan Donald and Jonty Rhodes, the world's first specialist fielder, whose torpedo run-out of Inzamam-ul-Haq earlier in the tournament draws gasps of admiration to this day. Victories over Australia, West Indies, Pakistan, India and Zimbabwe had propelled them all the way to the semi-finals at the first time of asking, and under brooding skies, they had been left needing 22 runs from their last 13 deliveries to defeat the new favourites, England, and reach the World Cup final. But it was not to be the moment rain stopped. The scoreboard showed - 22 runs required off 1 ball. And that triggered the "Chokers" tag for the South African team for times to come

In February 2003, a day before the start of the World Cup, Warne was sent home after a drug test during a one-day series in Australia returned a positive result for a banned diuretic. Warne claimed that he took only one of what he called a "fluid tablet" – the prescription drug Moduretic – given to him by his mother to improve his appearance. A committee established by the Australian Cricket Board found Warne guilty of breaching the Board's drug code, and imposed a one-year ban from organised cricket. 

At the time, Warne took the view that the ban imposed would lengthen his Test playing career, after already having announced that he was going to retire from one-day internationals after the '03 World Cup, although the ban led him to briefly reconsider that decision which he ultimately stuck with. That Warne was allowed to play in charity matches while serving his one-year ban was criticised by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) although WADA, in turn, was criticised by Warne for interfering in the matter.

The Olympic Games is a major international multi-sport event. During its history there have been boycotts on 6 occasions, all of the Summer Olympics. The first boycott occurred at the 1956 Summer Olympics and the most recent was at the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Rhodesia was prevented from entering when its invitation to the 1972 Summer Olympics was withdrawn by the International Olympic Committee, following protests by other African countries. South Africa was not invited to the 1964 games, and its invitation to the 1968 games was withdrawn when numerous other teams threatened to withdraw. South Africa was not permitted to return to the Olympics until the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Canada and Australia had threatened to boycott the 2020 Summer Olympics over the Coronavirus epidemic before the games itself were postponed for 2021

The O. J. Simpson murder case was a criminal trial held in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Former National Football League (NFL) player, broadcaster and actor O. J. Simpson was tried on two counts of murder for the June 12, 1994 slashing deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. At 12:10 a.m. on June 13, 1994, Brown and Goldman were found stabbed to death outside her condominium in the Brentwood neighbourhood of Los Angeles. Simpson became a person of interest after police found a bloody glove behind his house and was formally charged with the murders on June 17. When he did not turn himself in at the agreed time (having previously been released after perfunctory questioning by police detectives), he became the object of a low-speed pursuit in a white 1993 Ford Bronco SUV owned and driven by his friend Al Cowlings. TV stations interrupted coverage of the NBA Finals to broadcast the incident. The pursuit was watched live by an estimated 95 million people.

Who should board the flight to Rio? Two-time Olympic medallist and former World champion Sushil Kumar or Olympic quota place winner and the then Asia and World championship medallist Narsingh Yadav? This was the biggest riddle in the Indian sports circles in 2016. The court ruled in favor of Narsingh Yadav and that was the end of Sushil Kumar’s Olympics dreams.

However, Yadav failed two anti-doping tests, conducted on 25 June and 5 July 2016, testing positive for metandienone, which he asserted was to "sabotage" his chances of competing at the Olympics, following which he was given a clean chit by NADA.[ The World Anti-Doping Agency challenged the decision and the case was moved to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. A day prior to Yadav's first bout at the Olympics, on 18 August 2016, he was handed a four-year ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport 

Amidst the latest furore over the Olympics doubles team Bhupati even went on to call Paes a 'backstabber' a term used in many sports headlines. Clearly their relationship has deteriorated to the point of no return.

Paes was at ease with the attention, was debonair and  outgoing and had a penchant for the histrionics too. Bhupathi, in stark contrast, has always been a man of few words and inward drawn.

The first sign of discord surfaced when they had differences over Enrico Piperno, Paes’s trainer during his initial days.  Piperno, who had a huge influence on Paes, “did not fancy Bhupathi”. However Paes believed Piperno would be  more useful in a managerial capacity

Also, Bhupati had lived in Paes’s shadow long enough and wanted to make his own  decisions. The tension could have been defused but for their fathers who made  needless statements in public. Yet the two tagged along despite the  now-growing differences.

But the differences apparently became more acute following Bhupathi’s  association with Globosport, a sports management firm. In some quarters,  it was deemed as a needless distraction, feeding on Bhupathi's mental  energy.

The 2013 Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting case arose when the Delhi Police arrested three cricketers, Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, on the charges of alleged spot-fixing. The three represented the Rajasthan Royals in the 2013 Indian Premier League. In a separate case, Mumbai Police arrested Vindu Dara Singh and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan for alleged betting and having links with bookies.

In July 2015, Sreesanth, Chandila and Chavan were cleared of all the charges after they were found not guilty by the Patiala House Courts. However, in January 2016, Chandila was given a life ban from all forms of cricket by the BCCI. In March 2019, the Supreme Court lifted the life ban imposed by BCCI on Sreesanth. 

A Cricketing Career Which Attained Tectonic Heights But Got Tarnished By Match Fixing

Under Cronje's captaincy, South Africa were consistently ranked among the top three sides in both Test and ODI cricket. His record as ODI skipper was nothing short of spectacular as 99 wins in 138 matches made for staggering 73.7 win percentage. Just as when Hansie Cronje's legacy was growing into a legendary figure, the match fixing scandal rocked South Africa cricket and also tarnished the image of one of their most loved sporting icons Hansie Cronje besides other prominent South African cricketers. South Africa's most revered and admired cricketing son had been trapped by the evil clutches of fixing and Cronje's high moral grounds unfortunately fell prey to the menace.

After the Kings Commission was set up and a lot of details unearthed about the involvement of South African cricketers into spot-fixing on the Indian tour in 2000, Hansie tearful admission of guilt was hard to believe for millions of fans but the reality had eventually come out to shatter millions of hearts.

 

Nothing was ruled out. In the febrile hours after Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer was pronounced murdered on Thursday 22 March, 2007 suspects came and went with the tropical breeze. It was a mystery and a sensational news : a sporting murder at a World Cup.

In the windowless room that evening, anything seemed possible. Was Woolmer poisoned? 'It's possible,' the investigator said. The work of a hitman? Maybe. Is there more than one murderer? Plausible. Could a match-fixing syndicate have ordered the cricket coach's death?
