  • 102. How To Start Off On The Road To Financial Freedom Pt. 4

Last thing we have to look at in this series is how you get your adult life started building wealth. We'll look at things people put off for so long that they shouldn't. And, if they didn't, they would build wealth faster.

"Unite liberality with a just frugality; always reserve something for the hand of charity; and never let your door be closed to the voice of suffering humanity."
    Patrick Henry

So, what can you do to build wealth? Here are some things that help:

    • Buy a house ASAP- Earns equity, bring roommates, have options when you move
    • Get married early (but that doesn't mean rush)
    • Run numbers on purchases
    • Learn to do things for yourself
    • Take hand-me-downs
    • The aim of these tactics is to have them as tools, knowing that the goal is to reduce the number of sunk costs in your life. By being responsible and frugal, you can start on the road to financial freedom.

In this episode we’ll continue our discussion on financial freedom. Well look at some alternatives to college that can help you get better jobs.

The aim here would still be to earn, save, build credit, and stay clear of debt.

The difference is how you get there.

-Oscar Wilde“Success is a science; if you have the conditions, you get the result.”

      Other opportunities besides college:

      • The trades
      • Coding
      • Self-employment
      • unconventional career paths

After high school comes a fork in the road. Today we will cover one of those which is the college route.

"Financial freedom is available to those who learn about it and work for it."
        - Robert Kiyosaki
        Recap

Many of the principles that we talked about last week don’t change, but the way that they are implemented and how you go about them doesn’t change.

The goal still will be to earn money, save money, build credit, and avoid debt.

How to make financial progress in college
        • Earn more money- by working more hours or somewhere you can get raises
        • Save more money- because you're earning more (duh)
        • Avoid debt- to the extent you can and make sure the debt you take on is justifiable
        • Build credit- start paying your bills ON TIME

        • 99. How To Start Off On The Path To Financial Freedom Pt. 1

I find that one of the most important things that we can do in our life to increase liberty is to be financially free. That doesn’t mean you have to make $1 million a year. And, in fact, I want to start off by talking about how to be financially free while in high school.

This is going to be another multi part series talking about how to start off in the right place financially to set yourself up for success later. This isn’t a Dave Ramsey video on how to get back on track, but a lesson from someone who started off right on how they did it.

So, today we'll talk about how you (or a someone you know) can get their adult life started on the right financial foot.

-Dave Ramsey"You're not a bad parent if you don't save for your kid's college because instead you had to choose to feed them and clothe them. Those things come first. They can go to school and do this thing called 'work' while they're in school."
Here is what a high schooler can do to get started:
          1. Start earning money (and start saving it too)
          2. Put most of your savings in a mutual fund, and some in a bank savings account
          3. Find ways to build credit (without risking a lot of debt)
          4. Assess the right college or alternative path for you (both practically and financially)

          6. 98. Do Facts Matter?

My answer, yes... most of the time at least. It seems that facts only matte when they serve your point of view. People use them as clubs rather than in search of truth.

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
            -Henry David Thoreau

A few things have come up on the campaign trail and in the wake of impeachment that made me notice this tactic.

Trump and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are both known as being inexact with their language. Recently, both have had some goofy mistakes that have lead people to miss the point of their message.

AOC used the name Milton Keynes, mixing up John Maynard Keynes and Milton Friedman, two of the most prominent economists in the last 100 years. It's funny because she proves over and over again that she actually is ignorant.

But ask yourself, would you give one of the people you follow some slack if you saw this?

Trump then went out and said he heard the one word he wanted to hear, "Total exoneration." Joy Behar then called him out because it was actually two words.

These are cases where the fact they're being criticized on are not the point. Trump's point that he was exonerated is true. Just look at his poll numbers.

AOC's point about economics was, "famed economist Milton Keynes predicted that by 2030, GDP and technology would have advanced so much that it would allow everyday people to work as little as 15 hours a week and provide for their families."

That is something he said, and actually there's evidence that that could become reality, but not for the reason he thought. Also, it would require us to be content with less status. A $30,000 salary today provides far more luxury than it did in 1905, despite being a modest income.

Instead of having a conversation about the topic at hand, we're talking about irrelevant details. That's where facts don't matter.

They do matter when they truly affect the conversation. What a candidate plans to do in office matters, as well as whether or not the president is actually being thrown out of office. It matters to our lifestyles what value we produce and if we can live off a 15 hour work week.

Now, what are the actual facts that pertain to these issues?

          7. 97. How To Attain Virtue Through Discipline
"The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature."
            Marcus Aurelius

The 7 deadly sins: Pride, Envy. Gluttony, Lust, Anger, Greed, Sloth

            Cardinal virtues and Theological Virtues:

Four cardinal virtues: prudence, temperance, fortitude, justice

Three theological virtues: faith, hope, charity

            Discipline your mind

There are two ways of discipline in your mind. One is by learning, and the other is figuring out how to control your thoughts more effectively. I find that it's best if these two things are done together. As you learn more, especially if you are learning about what is good, you'll be there to focus your mind on better things. While you're doing that, you should find ways to push bad thoughts out of your mind and hone in on good thoughts.

            Discipline your actions

Now, it's time to put your learning to work. You have to begin acting out what is good and learning how to do it better. You have to find a way to discipline yourself in all areas of your life: physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. For men, it's often easiest to start with the physical because that actually begins to wire your body the right way to take on other challenges.

            Discipline your schedule

Once you begin to act out positive things, it's time to find a way to do them more regularly. Finding time early in the morning or late at night depending on what kind of person you are to read, work out, and grow spiritually is important.

          8. 96. How To Handle Emotions: A Discussion On The Passions

In this episode, we'll discuss the Passions, or emotions, and how to channel them properly. This comes from St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica, and I think they're pretty comprehensive.

"Everything negative - pressure, challenges - is all an opportunity for me to rise."
            -Kobe Bryant

Before we dive in, I think it's important to define a few terms.

Appetite- any inclination or tendency to some good or suitable object or away from some bad or unsuitable object.

Passion- Receptivity, being acted on by another; or intense movement of the sensitive appetite

Concupiscible Passion- Sense appetite seeking pleasure, which is found in the good

Irascible Passion- Sense desire to fight or escape danger

            THE CONCUPISCIBLE PASSIONS

            1. Love

            2. Hatred and concupiscence

            3. Pleasure

            4. Sorrow

            THE IRASCIBLE PASSIONS

            1. Hope and despair

            2. Fear

            3. Daring

            4. Anger

          9. 95. Why We Have The Right To Guns

The Second Amendment debate has recently heated up quite a bit due to new laws that Virginia is trying to pass to restrict gun ownership.

Today we will talk about why there is a second amendment and four major reasons that the founders thought it was important.

"Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty."
            Plato

            Sporting

Shooting is and, has been since guns have been invented, A popular pastime. Whether it's targets, or target practice or really usage, Americans have enjoyed shooting sports throughout its history.

            Food

The main issue that people bring up is that guns were for hunting so you don't need "military style" weapons. The fact is that guns are used for food whether it's hunting or quickly and humanely killing livestock.

            Self-defense

One of the more serious reasons why we have it is in the case of self-defense. The saying goes that when you need help now cops are only minutes away and that's true. If you have to defend yourself in the moment there's no better way than a firearm that you know how to use well. That's been true since the frontier when you even had to defend yourself against animals in addition to other people.

            Defense against tyranny

The most important reason and the reason why most founders site in talking about the Second Amendment, is to defend against tyranny. It is important to have a militia ready to take on anyone who tries to take the guns. The reason is that an unarmed people are easy to oppress.

This is why slaves were disarmed, and the NRA was founded in order to give black citizens legal recourse when their rights were violated in regards to the Second Amendment.

          10. 94. You’ll Be Missed, Roger Scruton

A couple days ago, a genius, philosopher, and one of my personal inspirations passed away. Roger Scruton has done yeoman's work answering the Modernism and Postmodernism that has set out to define our time.

“Art once made a cult of beauty. Now we have a cult of ugliness instead. This has made art into an elaborate joke, one which by now has ceased to be funny.”
            — Roger Scruton

He is a truly wonderful thinker, and today I wanted to commemorate him and explain why I am such a fan of his work as well as why I am persuaded by his philosophy.

These three reasons we'll discuss today show why his contributions and the spirit of his work will be missed.

            • His defense of Conservatism and conservatism
            • His answer to the Modernists and Postmodernists
            • His understanding of and ability to describe beauty
