I am Angela Birdsong your Conversation Piece host coming from KPFK Studios with the real day to day happenings of urban living locally and worldwide.

Black immigrants across the United States are being detained, snatched, disappeared, kidnapped from their families, friends and their communities by ICE, with little media coverage, little public outcry, and very little accountability. Today on Conversation Piece, meet Nana Gyamfi, Human Rights Attorney, Professor, KPFK host of Sojourner Truth Radio Fridays at 7am and Executive Director of Black Alliance for Just Immigration also known as BAJI. BAJI was formed to bring Black voices together to advocate for equality and justice in our laws and our communities. Yes, Nana will discuss the SCOTUS decision on the Temporary Protected Status designation for Haiti.

What’s happening to our Black immigrant brothers and sisters is not separate from what’s happening to African Americans. The work of BAJI reminds us that immigration justice is racial justice. We are stronger together. Nana Gymafi says, “We build the world we need and deserve by supporting and protecting each other. Whatever the challenges, we know that we are good because we got us!”

Today on Conversation Piece…A Father’s Day Special as I present to some and introduce others, my father, the late, great Edwin Birdsong.

The Conversation Piece show you are about to hear with my father, Edwin Birdsong, was recorded at the Harriet Tubman Center for Social Justice for Radio Justice Los Angeles where Radio Justice was housed. It was the day before my father died. The show was scheduled to air the day after he passed away and it did air on Tuesday after the King Holiday. It would be the last interview of my father that just happened to be on my show.

That day at Radio Justice with program manager Adam Rice, audio engineer Joseph Tucker, my other two guests, my cousin Michael Washington creator of my opening and closing theme song and Kris DJ Stress McManus founder of the Producers Corner we enjoyed our time recording the show. Today on Conversation Piece… California Black Power Network (CBPN), Congregations Organized for Prophetic Engagement (COPE), and more Black organizations across California held the Black Ecosystem Gubernatorial Forum, on the anniversary of the LA Uprisings on April 29th. All of the California governor candidates were invited to address specific policy demands of California’s Black community.

We will hear this forum today on Conversation Piece which is not a debate, but is an accountability session with questions from our communities, placing the answers on public record, ensuring everyone knows this election matters.

Today on Conversation Piece…from 838 East 6th Street in the apartheid state, the center of Downtown Los Angeles known as Skid Row…a powerful presentation at Los Angeles Community Action Network better known as LA CAN during their monthly Residential Organizing Committee Meeting moderated by LA CAN Lead Organizer, Adam Smith, for a conversation about building people and community power with former leaders of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers, Jerome Scott and Walda Katz-Fishman. The League of Revolutionary Black Workers, one of the most important working class movements in US History, based in Detroit, Michigan were 2nd and 3rd generation northerners from the evil Jim Crow South, fought to end the exploitation and poverty of automotive workers against corporations and unions. Authors Jerome Scott and Walda Katz-Fishman describe the rise, the history and formation of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers from 1968 to 1971, challenging both race and class oppression in auto factories and within the United Automobile Workers union.

But first let’s hear from the LARSO Campaign, the Los Angeles Rent Stabilization Ordinance with Lena Sullivan of SAJE who is part of the Keep LA Housed Coalition, and from Memphis Paredes of Lincoln Heights Neighborhood Council. Lena was the lead organizer at a rally in front of the Los Angeles City Hall about LARSO to get it passed in the Los Angeles City Homeless and Housing Committee. Paredes and Sullivan along with many others are helping to keep rent from being so damn high.

Today on Conversation Piece hear the story of Nicholas Burgos, who was murdered by Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Dalia Gonzalez while he was hospitalized. Joining us to tell Nicholas' story is his sister Maria Burgos about that fateful day at Harbor UCLA Medical Center when Deputy Gonzales fired 9 shots at Maria’s brother, Nicholas, 7 of the 9 shots hit him. Hear about Nicholas, the big hearted generous funny man.
