Conversations from the Diaspora episodes

  • On Identity and Sense of Community in the African Diaspora (with Azubuike Nwadei)

I am joined by another one of my good friends, Azubuike Nwadei, and we will be discussing identity in our community as African-Americans, as Nigerian-Americans, as Igbo-Americans, and as Biafrans.  We discuss what each of these hyphenated identities means to us at different points of our lives, the concept of home, our experiences growing up - good or bad - that shaped us and our interactions with different members of the diaspora, at what point being African became "cool" or acceptable to us, and some of our hopes for the future as it relates to the kind of lives we want our children to have different from our own upbringings.

  • On Child Labor, Domestic Workers, & House Helps
In this episode, I discussed the issue of underaged child labor in Africa with a specific focus on domestic workers or house helps as they are commonly called. Like many developing countries in the so-called global South, there are a number of issues that plague countries in this region, and in societies that are traditionally patriarchal, women and children seem to suffer the most. The system of “house helps”, or domestic workers is deeply embedded in Nigerian culture, and many other African cultures, particularly amongst well-to-do families who can afford to hire them. For some house helps, (which are most often young girls in their adolescent up to teenage years), being in this position may mean a better chance at life when they serve good families who can help fund their education, but for countless others, they face physical violence, sexual abuse, and mental abuse at the hands of the families that they serve. 15 million children under the age of 14 are working across Nigeria. This issue desperately needs to be addressed by the Nigerian government and other African governments with the issue of child labor.

  • How're Y'all Feeling? - Checking In
How's everyone doing? I know we have been home for a month or more now due to COVID-19. Hope that you all are safe and in a good place mentally. What are you doing while quarantined? I apologize for the poor sound quality in a previous episode and for not posting anything in almost a month! In this clip, I revisit some of the questions I asked in a previous episode to give the listeners a chance to respond.

  • On Identity in the Black Community: Conversations w/ a "Regular Black" Girl (Toynia Edmond)
**I apologize for the poor sound quality. Promise to work on improving this for subsequent episodes.**
In this episode, I'm joined by my friend, Toynia Edmond, and we discuss how we identify as black Americans in the diaspora and our differences and similarities from the Black American and Nigerian-American perspectives. Some of the topics we discussed were what home means to us, how we relate with other members of the diaspora, some stereotypes we may have heard about each other, the Year of Return 2019, and what are some ways we can bridge the gap between the continent and the diaspora.  Join us in the discussion. Feel free to leave a comment and share this episode with others.
