Welcome to ‘Conversations on Wealth’ — a podcast series that explores financial complexities and modern strategies for the discerning investor. Brought to you by ROPAN Financial Services founders and advisors Jason Panozzo-Tile and Rodney Gilham, who share their cumulative years of experience helping people of all ages as they seek financial independence.
In this podcast, we welcome ROPAN advisor Nick Cullis as fill-in for Jason – who is off travelling on some well deserved rest – sitting alongside ROPAN co-founder Rodney Gilham.
Rodney discusses how busy he is as a financial planner as the financial year comes to a close. As we approach June 30, it becomes a particularly hectic time for the advisors at ROPAN — but why?
We’ll explore the various tasks that ensure the best outcomes for clients at this time of year, such as contributions to super, minimizing pension penalties, managing complexities around self-managed super funds, and planning complicated property transactions that need to be executed in a specific manner.
We discuss how planners work effectively with accountants and how advancements in technology have reduced the time spent on compliance, allowing more time to provide better advice.
We ask: Is the market more sophisticated than it used to be? Do strategies now require a deeper level of planning and advice because of this?
As EOFY fast approaches, we pose the question: Do you have all the advice you need? Rodney’s passion shines through in this episode, highlighting the complexities of proper financial planning. What better time to book a consultation, explore your position, and get the right advice

In this podcast we’re covering off some of the financial planning fundamentals and advice for those who may never have worked with a financial planner prior. So, why do you need a financial planner? We start the discussion by exploring with some basic strategies pertaining to end of financial year, given that this episode was recorded during the month of May.
We also discuss potential tax planning strategies such as the instant asset write offs for vehicles or other major asset purchases, the benefits of topping up superannuation, and less well known initiatives like the ‘bring forward rule’ and when and where someone might consider employing a corporate beneficiary.

In our first podcast for 2023, we explore the patterns and trends that Jason and Rodney are seeing in the financial markets so far this year. Off the back of our previous podcast featuring local real estate agent Simon Burns, we start by exploring property investment markets, interest rates, and the current state of inflation in general. With commodities like lettuce, potatoes, and even Italian prosciutto flying through the roof with pricing on a seemingly perpetual rollercoaster ride, day to day living expenses are feeling the squeeze. What do these spikes in pricing mean for people’s discretionary spend? Is there a surplus of cash, or a reallocation of existing assets? We explore the increase of people’s entrepreneurial pursuits, side hustles, and evaluation of their day to day family budgeting. As the RBA continues to increase rates to put downward pressure on inflation, Jason reminds us that despite this doom and gloom, these things always go in cycles and that the astute investors typically have a plan with a long term view and adjust accordingly… and by long term plan, we mean far across the horizon, including considering succession plans and effects for the family. Ultimately it’s a balance of risk—and advice is worth gathering from people who have your best interests at heart.

With so many changes across wide areas of the market, what is the effect on investment strategies, and in particular mum and dad (boomer) investors with their superannuation fluctuating around market movement?
Since our last podcast, we’ve seen unexpected rises in interest rates, record inflation, and other major global factors, providing volatility across a wide set of market sectors. Russian military activity, supply chain issues, residual effects from COVID lockdowns and so much more are causing trickle down effects on value in a range of ways. So from amongst all this, is there a light at the end of the tunnel, and why are we seeing a sense of optimism returning to the financial dialogue?
In this episode, Jason and Rodney share their viewpoints on all these issues, highlight insights based on their industry reading and industry research, and discuss anecdotes regarding post-pandemic economics and forecasts for the months ahead. Listen closely and you might just hear about Rodney’s fishing prowess in the local waters.

Recorded as one long conversation and split over two parts, our latest episode delves into the many long term investment strategies and options available to the modern investor. Of course, what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another — thus the question is, what kind of investor are you? Strategic? Tactical? Future focussed, or something in between? And how has the COVID pandemic affected the outlook?
With superannuation as the king of the long-term safety-first strategy, we explore themes around other safe, traditional investment models like property or fund based shares, compared to more speculative assets such as crypto-currencies, rare collectibles, as well as common investments like shares, businesses and more.
