Turn To God w/ Carin -Domestic Violence: Debra Keeton #2

In “Turn to God with Carin,” Carin Jayne Casey shared that October is domestic violence awareness month. This is in a series relating to overcoming domestic violence or other challenges in life. This week we return to special guest, Debra Keeton who has gone on missions with Casey and Debra is in group ministry with “Totally Delivered and Free” ministry. She aired about this topic as part 1 of this series on October 23, 2017. We have $1.6 billion reported domestic violence toward women in a year’s time.

Debra briefly reiterated goals and characteristics of the abuser (using male as abuser, although a small % is female abuser). Abuse is a journey for the abuser, an addiction for him, with manipulation their ‘high’ as he accomplishes control. Abuser usually has 3 to 4 other relationships going on at the same time! It’s all about the abuser, his control, like the Narcissistic personality. Abuser gets satisfaction out of acting in public (with their victim) like a wonderful person, getting away with the pretense is a ‘high’ for them, especially fooling the authorities.

Victim can go through cycles of abuse for years, always including the honeymoon stage [the ‘hook’- being nice for a period so victim not leave, having hope]. Physical abuse is only one of many types: emotional, economical, etc. is also painful, debilitating, stripping the victim of self-esteem. Sudden blow-ups/ anger are actually pre-planned to keep victim off balance. Once victim realizes getting out is urgent, they must get past fear and shame, to finally decide to get help. They need to understand God has a better plan for them, and he is well able to lift them out of their pit. Education and counseling are also important in overcoming.
