In this podcast, we continue our series on building your implementation literacy by talking about the Science of Reading and bringing the research into the daily practice of schools. To help continue to unpack this topic, our friends, Dr. Jill Dunlap Brown and Dr. Vicki Myers, will discuss moving from knowing what SOR is to getting it into practice.
Vicki spent the first 24 years of her career as a special education teacher for struggling readers. She went on to serve in the special education division of a state department of education, followed by several years at a professional development center working to improve reading outcomes in schools in her state. She spent eight years as a Special Assistant in the Office of Special Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education, followed by several years as the Senior Legislative and Outreach Liaison for Wilson Language Training. After serving over 45 years across multiple levels of public education, Vicki says the ONE thing that haunts her and continues to drive her work is that she had NO idea how to teach a kid to read for the first 16 years of her career.
Jill has worked in the field of education for more than 20 years. She has worked with students, teachers, administrators, universities, and state departments during these years. She has served as a teacher, literacy coach, principal, assistant superintendent, and educational consultant during her career. Currently, she serves as a Co-Founder of Columbia Academy for Learning and Enrichment and CALE Education & Company. Through this work, she assists schools with implementing structured literacy, building sustainable systems for RTI/MTSS, and facilitating curriculum development around state standards. Jill co-authored the book Matching Reading Data to Intervention: A simple tool for elementary educators.
Jill holds a BA in Elementary Education, an MEd in Curriculum and Instruction, an EdS in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.
