CONVERSATIONS With Kim Carson

I was so looking forward to doing this interview. I've wanted to interview Jeff Daniels a number of times over the years but never had the opportunity until today. To be honest with you I'm glad that it has taken this long. This is the Jeff Daniels I would have wanted to talk to not so much the Dumb and Dumber Jeff Daniels. I don't know if they're the same guy but he has to have evolved over the years right? Dumb and Dumber, The Purple Rose of Cairo, or Terms of Endearment those were some pretty big movis for a guy who pretty much does it his way. He appears to be in a really good space and place of peace and contentment right where's he's at in life. Isn't that the goal? It doesn't hurt that he still lives in Chelsea, Michigan his childhood neighborhood, shovels snow in Michigan winters and still appreciates the change of color during an autumn day. Michigan can keep you grounded...hard work never hurt anyone. Jeff talks his music, film, his plays and his sons' music the Ben Daniels Band. Ken Burns being Ken Burns tells The Vietnam Story like no one before him. His mind, his perspective, his attention to detail, the way he frames a story I feel like he has no equal telling it...a story that is 50 plus years old but we are still learning from it.

This series took a decade to complete...Ken worked side by side with documentarian/film maker Lynn Novick for the past 10 years researching, compiling, interviewing, documenting everything they needed to have to be able to tell the unique and fresh story that they wanted to tell. The Vietnam War docu-movie debuting on PBS television September 17th, 2017.

The vast amount of interviews, raw footage, speaking to the Vietnamese first hand about their side of the story, Generals, Vietnam vets telling the story they lived during that time period in history it's all there. In addition to the compelling soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Attcus Ross there's the period piece music... Bob Dylan, Hendrix, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye.

As of late we've heard of distracted driving causing so many unnecessary accidents on the road. Whether it's texting, playing with the GPS, talking on the phone you need to be focused when you're behind the wheel of a car. The one thing that doesn't make it on the news is drowsy driving and it happens much more than any of us think...it's difficult to measure because unlike a breathalyzer that measures alcohol content, or your phone that will show law enforcement that you were texting at the time of an accident there is no measurement for drowsy driving.

Anson Williams talked to me a little bit today about drowsey driving, his new passion, because it happened to him and it could have cost him his life.

Wonder Woman is the most anticipated movie of the summer and today my conversation is with psychologist/author/editor of a plethora of super hero villain books. Ben is what most people would describe as a "Super Fan" who also happens to be a best selling author. He has been a fan of Prince for decades and tomorrow April 21st, 2017 marks the one year anniversary of Prince's death.

I remember playing Prince on the radio back at WDRQ in Detroit beginning in the late 1970's all the way through the 80's and 90's. To me Prince was a complex man with lots of opposing thoughts and views, he did things his way and fought to keep the music a clear reflection of who he was and what he wanted his art form to represent. He was always pushing boundaries...always. What I enjoyed most about Ben's book is that it is not filled with salacious gossip and rumors about Prince but it is more of an unbiased investigative look at an artist that forever changed the landscape of music.

Die-hard fans of Prince will enjoy the psychology, the behind the scenes look and the tasty nuggets about certain songs and how they came to be...as well as the Purple Rain movie and the importance of getting it made right. I especially enjoyed the references to Morris Day and The Time, Sheila E., Apollonia and Vanity 6.

"Dig If You Will The Picture" is written in such a way that the casual fan is able to enjoy it just as much as the die-hard. The book title "Dig If You Will The Picture" is a lyric pulled from the song When Doves Cry..."Dig if you will the picture of you and I engaged in a kiss" (I misspoke in the interview and said "you and I embraced in a kiss"). Writer Sailor Soldier Spy...Yes Ernest Hemingway was all of those things and more. Nick Reynolds carefully paints the picture of a Hemingway that most of us probably never knew existed.

Writer Sailor Soldier Spy: The Adventures Of Ernest Hemingway is a very fun read about a man with many interests, many gifts and talents, a man who lived a very full life until the age of 61 when he committed suicide as his father had done years earlier. Almost exactly 35 years after Ernest Hemingway's death, on July 1, 1996, his granddaughter Margaux Hemingway died in Santa Monica, California. Margaux was a supermodel and an actress, who co-starred with her younger sister Mariel in the movie Lipstick. Her death too was later ruled a suicide, making her "the fifth person in four generations of her family to commit suicide.

I've had the pleasure of having some conversations with some pretty amazing people both famous and not. Today's conversation with Peter Engel ranks right up there in my Top 3.
