Hello and welcome to episode one of Conversations with my Conservative Dead Father. This podcast comes from direct transcriptions of the email exchanges my father and I had the year before he died. My father was a smart educated guy who happened to also be a conservative. As you might guess, I’m a liberal. These discussions create a forum I know he would proud to be a part of - even if there’s a dangling participle in that sentence. Sorry Pops!
My father and I never tried to convince each other. Our objective was to learn and listen. It was a great gift to be able to hear the other side from someone who I very much respected, even if I totally disagreed with the conclusions.
So let’s get started.
Today we ask the question: Are we desensitized to corruption in politics?
Do we assume that because politicians are humans, and humans are tempted by power, that all politicians fall short in this way. From Trump’s impeachments to Clinton’s impeachment. From Santos’ lies to Hunter Biden’s laptop the media finds a way to paint our politicians as corrupt liars. It’s clear that there is bias in the media so it clouds our vision, so it’s up to us to dig deeper and make our own decisions.
The bottom line for me is that every politician will make mistakes. But how they handle those mistakes comes down to character. If you think they are generally a good person, you overlook their mistakes and assume they’ll fix them.
Trump campaigned on the fact that he was this amazing business person. But was it true?
