James Mangold's name sits on some of the most accomplished films of the last thirty years, and this month we bookend his career with two of them.
Cop Land (1997) was Mangold's second feature, a slow-burn ensemble drama set in Garrison, New Jersey, a commuter town governed by crooked NYPD cops. Sylvester Stallone plays the partially deaf sheriff who spends most of the film being underestimated by Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Liotta before he stops letting it slide.
Logan (2017) finds Mangold two decades on, working at blockbuster scale on a film that's anything but. A greying Wolverine drinks his way across 2029, minding a potty-mouth Charles Xavier and protecting a young girl with claws of her own.
John, Westy, and Matt give their verdicts on both, single out the scenes that stuck, and answer a Patron question on each film before turning to Mangold himself and his fondness for melancholy men on their last legs. After that, the shortlist vote, and only one of these is making it onto the ATRM Classic list.
