In the story of the Good Samaritan, we encounter two characters who are not moved when they see a man in trouble on the side of the road. They have, it seems, religious reasons for ignoring a man in trouble.
There is something quite disturbing about our “beliefs” causing us to turn our backs on ones in need. In the story this morning, Jesus is teaching that human compassion is not the special privilege of his followers. It is basic to being created in the image of God. His followers should be careful to allow their hearts to be moved with compassion when encountering one in need.
