The fun stuff! In this episode we discuss how inhaled anesthetics work and how we can monitor their effects. We discuss the differing measures of potency and onset and some unique characteristics associated with isoflurane, desflurane, and sevoflurane. Make sure to leave us a review!!
(PART 2) of the renal discussions. In episode 20, we discussed the A&P of the nephron. Today, we use that understanding to discuss the sites of action for the various diuretics. Additionally, we discuss renal injury and their anesthesia implications.
(Part 1) Episode 20 dives into the anatomy and physiology of the kidneys. We specifically discuss the nephron and the sites of ion transport. Be sure to look out for episode 21 where we build on this information and discuss the medications and diseases associated with the renal system.
To begin, we briefly break down the differences between COPD and Asthma. During the rest of this discussion we focus on the different pharmacologic modalities we can use to optimize our patient's respiratory function. (Beta2 Agonists, Methylxanthines, Cholinergic Antagonists, Corticosteroids, Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors, Antileukotrienes, Mast Cell Stabilizers, Ventilatory Stimulants)
In this episode, we discuss common blocks, medications, and complications associated with ophthalmic anesthesia. While ophthalmic anesthesia may not be a central focus of our anesthesia training, it is important that we have a good understanding of this topic to provide safe, effective care for our patients.
Whew....This was a long one! While there aren't many meds to discuss, each of them are used so frequently that we felt like we needed to take our time on each one. In this episode we discuss propofol, etomidate, ketamine, precedex, benzos, and barbiturates. Make sure you subscribe and leave a review!
Part TWO of our endocrine discussions. Today's discussion focuses on the adrenal cortex and medulla along with the thyroid gland.
In this episode we briefly review endocrine anatomy followed by a more in depth discussion of growth hormone, parathyroid hormone, and insulin. We discuss common complications due to alterations of these hormones and the anesthesia considerations associated.
We briefly discuss the pain pathway (see episode 7) and the anatomy of the opioid receptors. During the rest of this episode, we focus on the commonly used opioids and their unique characteristics.
BASICS! Today we discuss airway assessment and airway equipment. Make sure you understand airway anatomy (Episode 12) before moving on to this episode. Mallampati, ULBT, Cormack, ETTs, LMAs and more!
