Amos 07 — Micah 03
God Condemns Israel’s Idolatry and Promises Destruction; God Promises a Future Paradise; False Prophets Condemned
Hosea 08–14
God Announces His Righteous Judgement against Israel and Judah; God Promises a Future Restoration — the Church and the Eschaton
Today we commemorate Jonah. Called by God to preach in Nineveh, capital of Assyria, Jonah initially refused his call and attempted to flee. Whereas all are familiar with the story of Jonah and the whale, the Book of Jonah focuses more on God’s mercy, patience, and compassion. Christ Himself uses the story of Jonah and the whale in describing His own death, burial, and resurrection.
Hosea 1–7
God Commands Hosea to Marry a Prostitute; God Says That He Will Destroy Israel; God Speaks of the Eschaton
Today we celebrate the Festival of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist. An author of one of the four Gospels, Matthew was called to follow Jesus, and, in doing so, left behind a lucrative occupation as tax collector. Church tradition is uncertain as to the specifics of Matthew’s death.
