If your ancestors emigrated from Ireland, you’ve probably wondered about the life they left behind. And if you’re planning your own trip, maybe you’ve dreamed of staying in a traditional thatched cottage.

In Mitchelstown, County Cork, one family’s home tells a story that’s been unfolding for more than 250 years.

Jim Murphy, the current owner, is the sixth generation of his family to care for the cottage. His great-great-great-grandfather built it in the 1700s, and it’s been a witness to family gatherings, emigration, and – most poignantly – the tradition of the American wake.

The American wake was held when a son or daughter left Ireland for the U.S., likely never to return. Families and neighbors gathered for music, food, and prayers. It was both a farewell party and a funeral of sorts, filled with love, loss, and hope.

In Jim’s cottage, the echoes of those gatherings still linger. Old letters, photographs, and family memories keep the connection alive. Guests often remark that the house has a “special feeling,” as if the walls have absorbed centuries of emotion.

By the time Jim began restoring the cottage in 2022, it was in rough shape – damp walls, patched cement, and a thatch roof in desperate need of repair. The restoration was painstaking but authentic, with traditional lime plastering, mud walls, and the help of a master thatcher.

Now, when the Irish rain falls, visitors experience one of the cottage’s quietest charms: the thatch muffles the sound completely. Looking out at a downpour while hearing nothing at all is an oddly magical experience.

One of the biggest surprises for guests is how central Mitchelstown is. From here, you can reach Cork, Limerick, Waterford, or Tipperary in about an hour. The motorway makes travel easy, but the town itself offers plenty: cafés, restaurants, pubs, and a backdrop of the Galtee Mountains.

Mitchelstown has a planned grid layout (rare in Ireland) and even a U.S. presidential connection – President Ronald Reagan visited Ballyporeen in 1984, and the pub he stopped into now lives in two places: its exterior still stands in the village, while its interior was moved to the Reagan Library in California.

Day trips can include castles, distilleries, mountain hikes, and even the coast. Guests often tell Jim they regret not booking more nights once they realize how much there is to do.

The cottage remains a one-bedroom home, but it blends historic charm with modern comfort. Family photos, a vintage metal bed frame, and period details like a Sacred Heart image and a portrait of John F. Kennedy reflect Ireland’s 20th-century traditions.

At the same time, guests enjoy thoughtful touches: local butter, cheese, and yogurt, a cozy stove (insurance regulations prevent an open fire), fresh flowers, and even an espresso machine. Every detail is carefully chosen, creating a stay that feels curated rather than decorated.

Staying in a thatched cottage is as much about experience as it is about comfort. It’s stepping into history, feeling connected to generations past, and savoring the quiet pleasures of Irish country life. As Jim says, guests aren’t just visiting—they become part of the story.

When a new list of “underrated” Irish attractions makes the rounds, I always take a look. Sometimes I nod in agreement. Sometimes I roll my eyes and wonder who decided the Rock of Cashel was a hidden secret.

That was my reaction to a recent ranking from SumUp, which used everything from TripAdvisor reviews to Instagram posts and Google searches to highlight Ireland’s lesser-known spots. A great idea, if the definition of underrated doesn’t stretch to include Blarney Castle.

That said, there are a few places on the list that truly fly under the radar—and quite a few more that didn’t make the cut but should have. So let’s talk about the ones that are worth your time, how to fit them into your itinerary without going miles out of your way, and why a trip that mixes well-known highlights with lesser-visited places often ends up being the most rewarding.

Not everything on the list was a stretch. A handful of sites are genuinely overlooked by most travelers, even if they’re hiding in plain sight. Some are just far enough off the usual routes to be missed, while others sit in popular areas but don’t get the attention they deserve.

If you're looking to skip the crowds without skipping the good stuff, these are the spots to consider adding to your itinerary.

Just 15 minutes from Dublin Airport, Malahide Castle and Gardens is an easy way to start your trip -especially if you’re trying to stay awake after an overnight flight. The guided tours are engaging (even for kids), the gardens are gorgeous, and the on-site café and Avoca shop are the perfect spot to refuel. The castles setting in a charming seaside village make it feel like a gentle, scenic welcome to Ireland.

Pair it with: Malahide is a perfect day trip from Dublin – just 30 minutes by DART or bus. This is also a terrific way to refresh yourself before taking on your first day's drive.

Yes, it’s a cemetery. But it’s also one of the best places in Dublin to get a crash course in Irish history. The Glasnevin guided tours are anything but dull, and if you time it right, you might catch a re-enactment or costumed guide that brings the stories to life.

Don’t miss: A pint at John Kavanagh’s pub next door—known locally as The Gravediggers.

Pair it with: A visit to the nearby Botanic Gardens or following a tour of Kilmainham Gaol to continue your history lesson.

Sitting in Cork Harbour, Spike Island was once a monastery, then a fortress, and eventually one of the largest prisons in Europe. It’s a fascinating (and chilling) half-day experience, but be prepared – between the ferry ride, guided tour, and time on island, you’ll need 3.5 -4 hours.

Pair it with: Cobh's other maritime highlights, including the Titanic Experience and a hike up Spy Hill to get the iconic shot of the Deck of Cards houses and St. Coleman's Cathedral. For safety reasons do not climb on the wall – just hold your camera (or phone) over the wall and you'll get the shot.

Most visitors to Galway stick to the colorful Latin Quarter and Eyre Square, but a walk along the Salthill Promenade gives you sea views, fresh air, and a more relaxed pace. If you’re lucky, you might even spot someone kicking the “kicking wall” at the end for good luck.

Salthill is about an hours' walk from the Latin Quarter. If you're wanting to add it to a day's touring, consider the hop-on hop-off bus.

Pair it with: An afternoon exploring Galway City or as a wind-down after a day trip to Connemara.

Some of my favorite experiences in Ireland don’t show up in rankings at all. They’re not tied to big marketing campaigns or social media influencers – but they’re rich in story, scenery, and character.

Here are the spots I’d add to the list, along with ideas for how to include them without straying too far off course.

Tucked into the middle of the country, Birr Castle Demense feels like a fairytale estate with a twist- it played a key role in astronomical discovery. The gardens are lush and expansive, but the real surprise is the Leviathan: a massive telescope that was the largest in the world for 70 years.

Pair it with: A visit to Clonmacnoise or as a scenic detour between Dublin and Galway. It’s also an easy stop if you’re overnighting between the cities.

Located in the Shannon Estuary, this uninhabited island is home to a round tower, ruined churches, and sweeping views – all without any tour buses. You’ll need to take a short boat trip from Kilrush, but once you're there, it feels like stepping into another world.

Pair it with: A Loop Head drive or time in Kilkee. Great for travelers basing in west Clare and looking for something quieter than the Cliffs of Moher.

Often overshadowed by its flashier neighbor, the Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle is one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved Norman castles (keep your eyes peels for cannonballs!). Visitors can duck into the dungeon or climb to the tops of towers. Grab a sandwich and crisps at the cafe across the street before crossing the river to the parkland behind the castle for a picnic.

Pair it with: A visit to Cashel or the Swiss Cottage nearby. It’s a perfect half-day stop on your route between Dublin and Killarney.

Ireland’s most southerly point comes with a scenic drive, a dramatic bridge crossing, and views that rival the Cliffs of Moher – without the crowds. You might even spot seals lounging near the rocks below the signal station.

Pair it with: A stay in West Cork or as a very scenic drive from Kenmare or Killarney to Kensale (plan a full day). Make sure to check opening times, especially outside of summer.

Westport House sits on the foundations of one of Gráinne Ní Mháille castles—you may know her as Grace O’Malley, Ireland’s legendary Pirate Queen. Inside, you’ll find elegant rooms and family history; outside, acres of parkland, a lake, and seasonal attractions that make it especially fun for families. It’s a site that surprises people—historic, scenic, and far more than just another stately home.

Pair it with: A climb (or photo op) at Croagh Patrick (don't miss the moving famine memorial sculpture across the road!), or a bike ride along one of the coastal greenways.

Ireland’s northernmost point doesn’t get the love it deserves, but a drive around Inishowen delivers stone forts, famine history, a disappearing lake, and Malin Head – the actual tip-top of the island. You’ll even find a “magic road” that defies gravity (or at least seems to).

Tip: Contact Adam Stewart at Flat Cap Adventurers for an off-road adventure you won't soon forget!

Pair it with: A day trip from Derry or a side trip as you enter or leave Northern Ireland. Allow a full day to explore the loop.

Some of the sites on the original list are well worth visiting, but calling them underrated might be a bit generous. These are the places that regularly appear on “must-see” lists, sell out in advance, or are already firmly on the tourist trail.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t great. It just means they’re not quite hidden.

You can’t even get to Skellig Michael without advance planning – and that’s if the weather cooperates. It’s spectacular, but it’s no secret. Just ask the next Star Wars fan in line.

Yes, there’s more to see than the stone, but when your wait to climb to the top of the castle ruin to kiss the rock stretches on and on, it’s safe to say it’s not flying under the radar.

Kilkenny’s crown jewel and one of the most photographed spots in Ireland. Gorgeous? Absolutely. Underrated? Not quite. That said, Kilkenny is far more than just its castle – and most people leave wishing they’d allowed more time for exploration in Ireland’s medieval capital.

Still the most popular scenic drive in Ireland, especially with tour buses – though the Dingle Peninsula seems determined to take that crown. For a more underrated experience, head to the next peninsula over and follow the quieter, wilder Ring of Beara.

Both are standout heritage sites—just not hidden ones. Muckross draws huge crowds within Killarney National Park, and Bunratty’s medieval banquets book up fast.

Underrated can mean a lot of things. Sometimes it’s a place few people have heard of. Other times, it’s a stop that gets overlooked simply because it’s not on the tour bus circuit or trending on Instagram. But often, it’s a site that’s hiding in plain sight: worth your time, but easy to miss if you don’t know to look.

The best trips to Ireland don’t rely on someone else’s definition of what’s worth seeing. They find a balance – between the iconic and the unexpected, between the stops you’ve been dreaming about for years and the ones that take you by surprise.

Ireland is a country known for stunning landscapes and natural beauty. The abundant rainfall that contributes to the country's '40 shades of green' is also at least partially responsible for the lush gardens you'll find across the country.

While the majority of public gardens seem to be concentrated in the ‘sunny southeast', you can easily add a visit to a magnificent garden to any itinerary.

While gardens may not be what most people plan their Ireland vacation around, chances are you'll visit at least one.

And you should.

The combination of nature's artistry and human design make visiting Irish gardens a truly spellbinding experience worth fitting into your itinerary.

These gardens are well-known and tend to be found on many Ireland itineraries.

Powerscourt Gardens

Nearly every day trip from Dublin to Wicklow includes the 47 acres of immaculate gardens on the Powerscourt Estate. And for good reason.

Everything you look for in a magnificent garden you'll find here. Walled garden? Check. Japanese garden? Check. Immaculate lawns. Yep. Woodland pathways. You got it. Lake with a fountain? Yes – and it even has a grand stairway leading to the house. You'll even find a tower, worthy of any fairytale, that you can climb.

Plan to spend a few hours here if you can. And before you leave grab lunch from Avoca to take to the Powerscourt Waterfall- the tallest in Ireland (separate entry fee).

Kylemore Abbey Walled Garden

It's about a 15-minute speed-walk from stunning Kylemore Abbey in County Galway to the Victorian walled gardens that are nestled beneath the Black Stack Mountains. If you have the time, I highly recommend a more leisurely stroll. If you don't want to walk a free shuttle is available.

The garden covers approximately 6 acres and is divided by a mountain stream. The eastern half of the garden is the formal flower garden, lush with blooms in all colors and sizes. Crossing the stream to the western half you enter the ‘kitchen garden' with vegetables, herbs, and fruit trees.

To fully explore Kylemore Abbey & Gardens allow 3 hours minimum. This will give you time to enjoy the tour and history of the house, walk along the lake to the miniature Gothic church, visit the gardens (where you might also see the Connemara ponies), and enjoy a well-earned treat in the Tea Rooms or the visitors centre.

The Gardens at Blarney Castle

The Blarney Stone may be the first thing people think of when visiting Blarney Castle in County Cork, but I think the castle ruin dims in comparison to the estate's extensive gardens.

With over 11 gardens ‘areas' spread over 60 acres you'll find plenty to explore. My personal favorites are the Poison Garden, which sits just beneath the castle's famous stone. Harry Potter fans will recognize some of the plants here. The Rock Close is the oldest ‘garden' on the estate, said to be an ancient druidic settlement.

Not far from this is a circle of nine standing stones, two of which have fallen, known as the 7 sisters. The legend tells of a chieftan with 9 children – 2 sons and 7 daughters. Taking his sons on their first battle against a cattle raider, the sons were killed. Returning home with the bodies of his sons it is said he stopped at this spot and ordered his men to knock over two of the stones.

When visiting Blarney Castle & Gardens allow yourself a minimum of 2.5 hours – though I recommend a full morning or afternoon.

The Gardens at Muckross House

You'll find Muckross House in the heart of Killarney National Park in County Kerry.

During the 1850s the gardens underwent extensive work for the visit of Queen Victoria in 1861. In the early 20th century the Bourne Vincent family expanded the gardens with the addition of the Sunken Garden, the Rock Garden and the Stream Garden. Today the gardens are most popular in the summer months when the rhododendrons are in riotous bloom.

You can drive to Muckross House or take a jaunting car tour of the national park that can take you to Muckross House.

Some of these gardens may be a bit off the tourist trail. But that's definitely to your benefit as you may feel like you have them to yourself!

Lismore Castle Gardens

Though you can't tour Lismore Castle in County Waterford (though you can rent it if you pockets are deep enough), the idyllic gardens are open to the public. We love the ‘hidden' natural playground and the more natural trails away from the manicured formal garden.
Tip: just down the road is one of my favorite ‘hidden' spots – Ballysaggartmore Towers. Be sure to wear your walking shoes!

Vandeleur Walled Garden

The tranquil oasis of Vandeleur Walled Garden near Kilrush in County Clare is known for its stunning rose collection and relaxing garden paths. A small hedge maze and a meditation path take your mind in different directions as you explore. This is a great spot to visit if you are using the Shannon Ferry as you cross from Clare to Kerry (or vice versa).

Irish National Stud & Gardens

Located in County Kildare on the route from Dublin to most points west, these gardens should be on your list, even if you're not a ‘horsey type'. The magnificent Japanese Garden, often called the finest of their kind in Europe, is a soothing guide through the ‘Life of Man', allowing you to choose your own path and teaching you a few life lessons along the way. St Fiachra's garden named for the patron saint of gardeners has a more soothing, natural feel, a perfect spot to sit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The Gardens at Glenveagh Castle

Located in Glenveagh National Park in Donegal the castle gardens feature both a Victorian Garden and a walled garden. Surrounding this you have acres of ‘wild' gardens with marked trails to explore. No cars are allowed in Glenveagh National Park so you can opt to walk, rent a bicycle, or take the shuttle to the castle. You can easily spend a few hours here wandering the gardens, touring the castle, and wandering the trails.

The Gardens at Bantry House

Bantry House in West Cork is surrounded by gardens. In front of the house, leading to the bay is the terraced garden with 14 round beds. Behind the house is an ornamental garden overlooked by 100 steps. Climbing to the top of these steps offers a dramatic view of Bantry Bay and an entrance to the woodlands. Beyond this is the walled garden which is slowly being restored.
Tip: You can stay in Bantry House!

Birr Castle Demense

If you want one garden the entire family will love, choose Birr Castle Demense. Beyond the formal gardens and terraces – including the world's tallest box hedge – you'll find woodland strolls, waterfalls, river walks, and the ‘Whirlpool Spiral' of lime trees. In the middle of all of this is the world's largest telescope (until the early 1900s) and Ireland's largest treehouse. There is also a wonderful science museum. Birr Castle is still a private residence, but some summer dates do offer castle tours.

Glenarm Castle Gardens

Located along Northern Ireland's Causeway Coast, the gardens at Glenarm Castle include a formal walled garden with vibrant flower borders and more informal spots like the kitchen garden and herb garden. The walled garden is also home to seven rescued hedgehogs. While visiting you'll also want to enjoy the woodland walk.
Tip: Glenarm Castle offers a few options to stay onsite, including ocean view pods and the Barbicon Gate.

The final two gardens aren't full gardens but definitely deserve to be shared.

Garden of Remembrance

On a hill in Ringfinnan seemingly endless rows of trees overlook Kinsale, County Cork. Created by Kathleen Cait Murphy, a New York City nurse originally from Kinsale, the Garden of Remembrance is dedicated to the firefighters and their Chaplain, Father Michael Judge, who died during, and following, the attack on New York on September 11, 2001. Each tree includes information about one of the fallen heroes and many are adorned with personal items left by family and friends.

Dunbrody Abbey Hedge Maze

If you find yourself in County Wexford I highly recommend a stop to complete this hedge maze created of yew trees. In the centre is a tall viewing platform – terrific for yelling hints to those who are still trying to navigate the maze.
Before leaving be sure to visit Dunbrody Abbey, just across the road. This Cistercian Monastery has been standing 850 years.

Ireland's magnificent gardens are a testament to the country's natural beauty and rich history. From the grandeur of Powerscourt to the remote wildness of Glenveagh, each garden offers a unique experience that will leave you wishing you could recreate even a bit of that magnificence at home.

Whether you're a green thumb or simply appreciate the wonders of nature, consider adding a couple of these gardens during your unforgettable trip to Ireland.

See all the winners of the 2024 Irish Independent Reader Travel Awards

These top sites are popular for a reason. They deliver a terrific visitor experience that creates lasting memories.

But popularity has a downside. At some sites it is lack of tickets, at others it is overwhelming crowds.

Here's how to have the best experience at the most popular spots in Ireland.

Guinness Storehouse

Always prebook your tickets. The wait here can be hours long – and you aren't guaranteed entry. GetYourGuide – Viator – Guinness Storehouse

I personally prefer the final tour of the evening, but if you want to experience fewer people that may linger from earlier tours, choose the first two tours of the day.

Guinness Storehouse is easily reached via one of the Hop-on Hop-off buses and pairs well with a tour of Kilmainham Gaol.

Cliffs of Moher

If you've been listening to me for any amount of time you know that I advocate for people to visit the Cliffs before 10am or after 4pm to avoid the majority of tour buses.

You can also prebook your tickets on the Cliffs of Moher website to save money on earlier or later visits. These tickets give you full access to the visitor centre and experiences there.

Another option, if you are fit for an uphill hike and don't want to explore the visitor's centre, is to park at Guerin's Path, just south of the cliffs (look for signs). This per-car parking spot is at the highest point of the Cliffs. You can walk down a bit of the cliff walk to the main Cliffs of Moher visitor's area – just know that the hike back up can be challenging if you have mobility issues.

If you love a great hike be sure to book into a cliffs hike with Ollie's Tours.

I do not – ever – recommend a day tour to the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin. This is an exceptionally long day with nearly 7.5 hours of driving (10 hours total trip on average) for a very short view of the cliffs and other locations. It's just not worth it.

Waterford Greenway

I think the best way to explore the Waterford Greenway is on bike. We rented electric bikes from Waterford Greenway Bike Hire in Waterford and cycled to Dungarvin where the rental company picked us up and shuttled us back to Waterford. If you wanted a bit of a touring on your return to Waterford contact Bob McAuliffe at About Ireland Taxi Tours – he'll arrange a great one-way tour for you.

If you have a car and want to drive the route near the greenway you can stop at trailheads along the greenway and explore on foot. A few highlights along the greenway to check out are Mount Congreve Gardens, the Durrow Viaduct, and the Copper Coast.

Dublin Zoo

Located in Dublin's sprawling Phoenix Park, this is a terrific place to visit with young kids. If you can visit in mid to late afternoon to align with animal feeding that is a great way to see the animals be active. We just followed the feeder from cage to cage.

Phoenix Park can be accessed via Dublin bus, Hop-on Hop-off bus, and the Luas drops off nearby.

Spend some time in the park, as well. It's a great place to wander on a nice day and you may even see the herd of deer.

Emerald Park

Emerald Park (formerly Tayto Park) is Ireland's only amusement park.

If you are an amusement park fan, the park has an area for young kids as well as larger rides.

Additionally you'll find a zoo, petting farm, fun Lemur Woods and zoo talks, a couple playgrounds and splash park, a fairy forest and a steam train.

Emerald Park is approximately 45 minutes from Dublin.

Killarney National Park

Covering over 25,000 acres of mountains, woods, moors, lakes and rivers in County Kerry, Killarney National Park is a wonderful natural playground. It also includes a stunning manor house, terrific abbey ruin, and fabulous Ross Castle.

A great way to get an overview of Killarney National Park is with a jaunting cart tour. You can queue for a jaunting cart in Killarney near the park entrance. The jarvey will entrance you with stories as you ride through the park to Ross Castle.

The national park is easy to cycle and you'll also find boat tours and walking tours.

While the pathways near Muckross House and at the entrance from Killarney town can be busy, there are plenty of remote spots where you can feel like the only person around.

Titanic Belfast

This is the most popular tourist attraction in Belfast so you want to be sure to prebook your timed tickets.

If you don't want to take the guided tour in the building you can still explore the exterior areas, including the dry dock areas of the Titanic and Olympic.

I really like to do an early tour here and follow with a Black Taxi tour of the Peace Walls and murals – the taxi can pick you up at Titanic Belfast and drop you wherever you wish.

Giant's Causeway

My favorite way to visit the Giant's Causeway is to arrive before the visitor's centre opens or after it closes to avoid the heaviest crowds. You can't park at the visitor's centre, but there are a few parking spots nearby that only cost a few pounds.

It's a steep walk down to the causeway – and back up – but if you visit during visitor's centre open hours there is a bus that is £1 or €1 per ride (up or down).

For those who enjoy a good hike you can follow the path from the famed stones along the coast for a bit, before needing to ascend steps up the side of the cliff. The views here are terrific. If you don't want to climb those steps you can also access this path near the upper bus parking.

Kilmainham Gaol

Is it a bit morbid to visit a place where so many people were treated brutally, starved, and executed?

Probably. But these stories, and the ties to the 2016 Easter Rising, draw thousands of visitors to Dublin's notorious jail each year.

While you *might* get lucky and find same-day tickets, your best option is to prebook your tickets 28 days in advance as close to midnight Irish time as possible for best availability.

Kilmainham Gaol is an OPW Heritage site, so if you plan to purchase a card when you arrive (can be purchased on site or at Dublin Castle in the city centre) be sure to scroll down the booking page and choose One Year OPW Heritage Card to place a zero cost booking.

Pair this with a visit to Guinness Storehouse (if it's on your itinerary), visiting the jail first. Give yourself at least 30 minutes after your tour to visit the museum and exhibitions.

Spike Island, Cobh

Spike Island, off the coast of Cobh in County Cork, is known as ‘Ireland's Alcatraz' but before that it was home to a 7th century monestery and a Cromwellian prison.

Construction of the star-shaped fortress began in 1779 and the famine era prison, the largest in the world in the 1850s, was built in 1847. The island retained a prison through 1985. From 1938 through 1985 the island was the Irish Army and Navy base.

The ferry to reach Spike Island takes 12 minutes and you will be met by a guide for the first 45 minutes of your visit. After that you are welcome to explore using the map you were provided with your ticket. You can also self-guide for your entire island visit.

The thing to remember about this tour is that your return boat is 3.5 hours later, so you need to be sure you have plenty of time in your itinerary. I prefer the noon sailing. It offers plenty of time to arrive and depart Cobh.

Cork is the largest county in Ireland and Mitchelstown is located in the northern part of the county near where the counties of Cork, Tipperary, and Limerick meet.

This area of Cork is known as the Golden Vale; a very rural area known for the quality of its farms and producers. The historic landowners of the area, the Kingston family, were good landlords to the Irish and left a fantastic Georgian architectural heritage.

St. George's Arts & Heritage Centre is newly restored and hosts live entertainment. Mitchelstown is also home to a famine workhouse.

The Galtee Mountains are the highest inland mountain range in Ireland, stretching 30 km from County Tipperary to County Limerick, just north of Mitchelstown.

The Galtees are filled with outdoor adventure from gentle walks to the challenging 3000 foot hike up Galteemore.

I received a terrific question from Jami Casey. This is actually similar to questions I receive often about how to split a group. So I will answer Jami's specific question, then offer a few general tips.

My family of 4 is traveling to Ireland in May of 2024, and I am wondering what you might suggest for my 21 year old daughter and I to do while my husband and son spend a day golfing at Old Head.  We will be staying in Kinsale  for two nights, the evening before the tee time and the evening they finish up their round of golf.

Kinsale is a charming harbour town that is the beginning or the end of the Wild Atlantic Way (depending on which way you are driving).

The town became known as the ‘gourmet capital of Ireland' and many visitors consider it a ‘must' on their itinerary.

If you are in Kinsale without a car I recommend joining a walking tour in the morning and fitting in a harbour cruise, as well. Take a walk out to Charles Fort for a bit of exploration, then return to town to wander the cute shops. Don't forget to stop for an afternoon sweet in one of the cafes.

If you have a car – or would consider hiring a driver for a day (contact About Ireland Taxi Tours) – Kinsale is a terrific place to tour from.

You could visit the English Market and the Gaol in Cork city and explore Cobh, last port of call for the Titanic and home to Spike Island, ‘Ireland's Alcatraz.'

Blarney Castle and Gardens can take 2-4 hours, depending on how much of the extensive grounds you want to see.

Or follow the Wild Atlantic Way to the west. Small fishing villages, Mizen Head, and Bantry are a few places you'll encounter.

When splitting your group for activities or touring you want to check 2 things.

Beyond this you just want to be aware of any time limits, especially if people need to be dropped off or picked up somewhere.

Since I checked in last from Dublin I've been on a whirlwind trip along the Wild Atlantic Way – from Clifden to Doolin, and now in Killarney.

Highlights so far include Kylemore Abbey, the Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and live music in every town.

Ireland's Celtic Coast, stretching along the southeastern part of the country, may not be as well-known as the Wild Atlantic Way, but you'll find plenty of outstanding coastal views, vibrant villages, and amazing attractions – with far fewer tourists.

Named for the Celtic Sea off the southern coast of Ireland, the Celtic Coast is used to describe the Ireland's southeastern coast, stretching from Dublin to Mizen Head. (In this article I stretch a bit beyond that to take in West Cork to the Beara Peninsula.)

This route is a terrific alternate to the ‘usual' tour route from Dublin to Killarney that travels via the Rock of Cashel, Cork, and Blarney Castle.

In addition to the stunning coastal views, charming villages and incredibly friendly people you'll also discover the ‘real' Irish experiences that so many visitors hope for.

After experiencing the wonders of Wicklow – including Powerscourt, Glendalough, and Avondale, continue south instead of cutting across the country to Cork.

The next county south from Wicklow is Wexford. The Ring of Hook and Hook Head Lighthouse – the oldest continuously working lighthouse in the world – offer dramatic coastal views.

Loftus Hall, often called the most haunted house in Ireland, is undergoing renovations and will debut as Ladyville House later this year.

The Irish National Heritage Park is a wonderful outdoor history museum, the Dunbrody Famine Ship in New Ross has an amazing story to tell, and the Kennedy Homestead highlights the close ties between Ireland and the US.

Both Tinturn Abbey and Dunbrody Abbey are wonderful examples of monastic Ireland – and Dunbrody Abbey has a fantastic hedge maze.

The village of Kilmore Quay is where you catch a ferry to the Saltee Islands. And Curracloe Beach is a local favorite.

In the medieval city of Kilkenny you will find the fairy tale Kilkenny Castle and the Medieval Mile- which includes St. Canice's Cathedral (and one of only 2 ancient round towers that can be climbed), the Medieval Mile Museum, and the Smithwick's Experience.

Castlecomer Discovery Park is a terrific outdoor experience for families.

Sports fans will want to make time for an Irish hurling experience.

Passing over the Knockmealdown Mountains via the Vee Gap you'll pass from Kilkenny into Waterford. Be sure to pull to the side for scenic views from the top of Sugar Loaf.

Stop in Lismore and visit the gardens at Lismore Castle as you make your way to Dungarvin, a wonderful harbour town.

Between Dungarvin and Waterford is the Copper Coast Geo Park. Waterford's trio of museums, collectively known as Waterford Treasures, share the history of Ireland's oldest city.

The Waterford Greenway also runs between Waterford and Dungarvin. Rent bikes to take in the entire trail or stop and enjoy bits of it as you drive through the area.

The tiny seaside village of Ardmore has a stunning cliff walk from St. Declan's Well to the round tower at Ardmore Cathedral. The Cliff House Hotel in Ardmore is a spectacular stay.

Cork is the largest county in Ireland and while a few spots in the eastern part of the county are quite well-known – Blarney Castle, Cobh, and Kinsale – much of the county is often overlooked.

The Mizen Head Peninsula is the most southwesterly point of Ireland. Cross the large concrete bridge to access the maritime museum and viewing points. This can be a busy location but nearby Three Castle Head has beautiful walks and far less traffic. Stay in Crookhaven for wonderful pubs with live music.

Tiny Sheeps Head Peninsula is a dark-sky area. The hike out to the signal light from An Cupan Tae is wonderful on a fine day.

The town of Bantry has loads to offer. Stay here an explore locations like Whitty Island and Garnish Island or take whale watching and sea safari tours. Glengarriff Park is just around the bay.

The Ring of Beara, split between the counties of Cork and Kerry, is filled with little villages, small shops and attractions, ancient sites, and plenty of unspoiled scenery.

Sheeps Head Lighthouse The 1.5 km hike from the car park to the signal light and back is terrific on a fine day. Treat yourself to tea at the cafe on your eturn.

Castlefreke Forest Forest park with trails and a castle to discover. Near beaches and wonderful rural towns.

Cous Pier Caves A remote spot on the Beara Peninsula. Locals enjoy this spot for a swim at high tide. Always be aware of the tides when visiting.

Located where Ireland's ‘Sunny Southeast' meets the ‘Wild Atlantic Way', Kinsale is a charming fishing village with narrow, winding streets, a picturesque deep harbour, and delicious food.

Kinsale is about 20 minutes southwest of Cork City and is very popular as a ‘day trip' spot within Ireland.

Tip: leave plenty of time for your visit! There are so many things to see and do in Kinsale!

Charles Fort is a massive, star shaped fort. Now managed by the OPW, the fort has been restored and has terrific tours. Built with the intention of being attacked by sea, the fort would have been impregnable; unfortunately it did not fare well with land attacks and has a 100% failure rate.

Arrive at Charles Fort by car, or enjoy a scenic walk along the coastal path from the boatyard.

James Fort is on the opposite headland. Classed as an ‘amenity park', the ruin is accessible and can be reached by car or path from the village. Off season you may need to ask at The Dock Bar for a key to the door.

The Lusitania Museum located at The Old Head Signal Tower is worth visiting. You'll find a charming café and walks with stunning views.

If you enjoy shops there are dozens of boutiques, as well as loads of little coffee shops, and a hearty pub culture.

Learn more about Kinsale on one of the guided walks. (We recommend Don & Barry's Historic Stroll– so entertaining and terrific for families!) Or add to your adventure on the Kinsale Ghost Tour – a ‘Monty Python-esque tour loosely based on the town's history'.

Hop aboard a harbour cruise or hire kayaks or stand up paddleboards and get out on the water. Or take a windsurfing lesson from the Kinsale OEC.

You will find dozens of delicious, highly acclaimed, restaurants in this small village.

Try The Supper Club for craft cocktails, Crew for an excellent wine menu, Fishy Fishy is renown for seafood and Finn's Table for an upscale Irish menu.

Or enjoy takeaway by the water. I recommend Dino's Fish & Chips.

Spend an afternoon in Cork City. Be sure to visit the English Market, Cork City Gaol, ring the Shandon Bells, and wander the city crossing the river multiple times.

Explore Cobh. Take a ferry to Spike Island, the visit Cobh Heritage Centre for emigration and Titanic history.

You can't come to Kinsale and not golf. The Old Head is known as ‘Pebble Beach on steroids'; plan a full day.

Head to West Cork. Enjoy the small villages and coastal walks (one of our absolute favorites is Sheeps Head Peninsula).
