One of the most significant phenomena of the dictatorship period was emigration. Economic hardship, political repression, and limited opportunities drove many Portuguese citizens to seek better lives abroad. By the 1960s, emigration reached unprecedented levels, with over 1.5 million Portuguese leaving the country in search of a brighter future.
