The sister and brother of Moses oppose him because of his "Cushite wife." Then they assert themselves as leaders that God can speak to just like He does to Moses. God hears their pride and prejudice and His anger "burned against them." Their story is a good reminder for us to examine any pride or prejudice in our hearts, confess it as sin, and ask God to give us a new heart toward others. A group of people living among the Israelites in the wilderness were called "the rabble." They had exited Egypt with the Hebrew slaves, though they did not belong to the people of God. Their bad influence proved to be a snare to the Israelites that resulted in the death of many. When the Israelites set out from Mt. Sinai to the Promised Land, they were completely dependent upon the guidance and direction of God. God appeared as a "cloud by day" and "fire by night" to lead the way. Whenever His presence moved, the people moved. Whenever His presence stopped, the people stopped. In Numbers 6, the Lord tells Moses to instruct the priests (Aaron and his sons) to pronounce a blessing upon the people.
