We’re the stars of our own lives and we all have a genre we’d prefer the script to follow. Rom-Com, Action/Adventure, Comedy...all experiences we’d like during a well-rounded life. But what happens when the script takes an unexpected turn down a foggy, deserted road? A road that leads to an abandoned hotel or a haunted cabin in the woods? What do we do when we find out the movie of our life has become a horror film? How can we survive the deadly mistakes and wrong turns that have claimed so many others? How can we make it out alive?

It’s all led up to this—you’re face to face with the killer. You think you have the upper hand. A candlestick over the head and he’s down for the count, right? Not so fast. The killer never stays dead. Just ask Jason, Michael, or Freddy. No, killing the killer is daily work. As the Reverend John Owen once said, “Cease not a day from this work. Be killing sin or it will be killing you.”

I mean, this is a no-brainer, right? Nothing good ever comes from going to the attic. It’s a place that’s haunted—not by ghosts, but by our past. The attic is a place where we store personal items and relics from a time gone by. And if we want live life to the full, we can’t get there by staying in the attic—dwelling on regrets, mistakes, and things we can’t change.

What’s the worst thing you can do in a terrifying situation? Pretend you’re not in a terrifying situation. It’s never “just the wind” making noise—it’s always a monster! And as former Admiral Jim Stockdale says, “You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

That never happens in a horror movie. Instead you hear, “OK everybody, let’s split up.” As soon as those words are uttered, you know someone is as good as dead. Why face whatever’s out in the dark by yourself? There’s strength in numbers, and there’s power in community. We can survive the most horrifying situations that life can throw our way—as long as we’re not facing them alone.

Don’t you feel for the people in horror movies? They find themselves in absolutely terrifying situations—and without warning! Or...were they warned? More often than not there’s an old-timer, a sign, or a legend that’s clearly telling people to stay away. The same is true for us. We could save ourselves a scary ordeal simply by looking for and listening to wise counsel.

God has empowered his people to boldly take ground and further His Kingdom in the world. He promises success—but that doesn’t mean there won’t be struggle. Walking into the land of milk and honey means wrestling with giants and wolves. Are you up for the fight? Are you prepared to step into the promises of God? Then bring on the conflict and the challenge—if God be for us, who or what can stop us!

 Something amazing happens when we take God at His word and follow him—we find His promises to be truer and better than we ever could’ve imagined. God consistently over delivers on His word, and as we take steps to trust Him, we will see success like never before.

Giants and wolves lurk around the Promised Land, but there’s something even more insidious on the prowl—US. Often, the greatest threat to living in God’s will is our ability to lose focus on His will. It’s on us to listen to Him, no matter what conflict or challenge competes for our attention.

We tend to think the “Promised Land” is where things are easy, and life is good. But in reality struggle and opposition are precisely what we should expect to find as we step into God’s promises for our life. Giants and wolves, not ease and comfort, are the indicator that we’re on our way to the land of milk and honey

Too many people follow a God of complete power yet live a life of crippling paralysis. We allow fear of conflict and challenges to stop us from following God’s will for our lives. To change that, we need to focus on who God is and the power He has given us. If we’re going to step into the promises of God, we must tap into the power of God.

Imagine doing everything you were meant to do with your life. Imagine coming to the end of it all knowing that you shot every arrow in your quiver and you never gave up too soon. To do that is costly. You will face great risks. There is no backup plan. Everything is required, even your last arrow. Yet it is the only way to pursue life’s deepest joys and greatest battles—with a full heart and an empty quiver.

Opposition comes to everyone. But if you are going to live a life that pleases God and never settles, you will have to stand your ground and keep shooting with the arrows you have been given. There is never a time to stop and say, “I gave enough.” If you keep shooting your arrows, risking all the way, opting to live until you have nothing left to give, you will outlast your own life.
