The second error is to be ignorant of both the capacity and nature of Christ-empowered resistance to overcome the power of our enemy and cause him to flee.-- When, through spiritual drowsiness, we become complacent and inattentive towards God-s word, our faith is left vulnerable to serious attack. Likewise, being ignorant of Christ-s powerful resources to resist and overcome the enemy can lead to an unsettling apprehension of the evil one-s power to overcome us. Peter-s counsel to be -alert- and to -resist- in the confidence that the God of all grace will -Himself restore you and make you strong and steadfast- is a sure antidote to the schemes of the enemy.

Overview: Last week we heard how, in the face of suffering, we were to arm ourselves with the same attitude that Christ had, living not for ourselves but for the will of God. This week, from 1 Peter 4-7-19, in light of Christ's imminent return, we are urged to love and serve one another with the various gifts God has given, even as we endure persecution from outside of the church. As Peter concludes this central section of his letter, we are reminded that all we do - our conduct among unbelievers, how we endure suffering, and our love for another - is to be done 'in order that in everything God may be glorified'.--For Peter's original audience, and for ourselves today, we should not be surprised at the opposition which comes our way for the sake of Christ. Instead, we can rejoice because as we share in his sufferings we also share in his glory, and can be assured that 'the Spirit of glory and of God' rests upon us. It is with great confidence, therefore, that we can entrust our souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

Overview: We have been reminded already this summer just how devastating a bush fire can be, and how quickly one can cause havoc. In our passage this week, just as the CFS urges us to be 'bushfire ready' and have our 'action plans' in place, Peter urges us to be prepared and ready, not for a bush fire, but for suffering for the sake of Christ. -Arm yourselves,- he says, -with the same way of thinking- that Christ displayed when he suffered in the flesh.----Living for the will of God, and not for our own selfish pleasure, is not always easy, and will often evoke some interesting and at times awkward responses from those around us - some of them, difficult to receive. However, we are to be prepared for the weird looks, the conversations stopped short, and for the potential unjust consequences our faith in Christ will bring about. Peter's instruction to 'arm ourselves' before these situations come to pass will help us endure them without compromise, and instead, with Christ-like love and self-control, so that in everything God may be glorified.

Overview: How should we live as the people who belong to God in a culture and a society that is sometimes hostile and, at other times, dismissive towards Christian faith---It would be easy to feel justified in becoming antagonistic towards those in power and cynically disregarding of their authority, particularly where they have no regard for what we believe or when such authority lacks integrity.--Some might argue that if this world is not our true home and our primary allegiance is to God and not to human authorities then are we not free from being responsible to those in power---Peter-s answer to such questions may surprise us.--He makes it clear that true Christian freedom need not be compromised by submission to those in authority, but instead actually finds its truest expression because as we honor those in authority we are serving God.--Confessing Christian faith, even in our society, will bring suffering sooner or later but let it not be because we have dishonored and disregarded those in authority by using our freedom as an excuse to justify our own willfulness, but because we are following in the steps of Christ.
