I was born in London to Kiwi parents who were there on their honeymoon. You may think it must have been a long honeymoon but that’s a story for another time. I was taken by ship and flying boat to Aotearoa and didn’t return to the country of my birth until I was 21. I was carrying a surfboard when I arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport.

Every morning offers us a beautiful opportunity: the chance to start anew in our relationships. But this renewal is only possible if we actively prevent the buildup of what I call ‘relationship gunge’ – those unspoken thoughts, unexpressed feelings, and silent resentments that gradually corrode the connections we cherish most. Like plaque in arteries or dust in a rarely cleaned room, this emotional gunge can silently undermine even the strongest bonds.

We live in a country of natural beauty and we pride ourselves on our clean green environment image. However, we are destroying the ocean floor around us. New Zealand is now the only country in the South Pacific to allow deep sea trawling – this is one of the most common methods in New Zealand for commercial fishing. (Attempts are being made to reduce the extent of trawling, but not fast enough in our opinion.)

In my Ferry Landing studio, I draw inspiration from the ocean rolling into Maramaratōtara Bay from Mercury Bay. My studio, nestled within our developing garden, provides a sanctuary for my creativity. While my surroundings significantly influence my work, my artistic vision has been equally shaped by years of travel and diverse life experiences.
