In Part 1 of this story, I suggested that people and political parties sit down and share kai together, speak and listen to each other and reach compromises through sharing ideas and understanding – and not use historical agreements to sow discord and division, as the Act Party’s Treaty Referendum Bill is doing. The party’s policy of New Zealanders having ‘the same fundamental rights regardless of race, religion, gender …’ is obviously a nonsense.

When Jacci Hilton was growing up on Auckland’s North Shore, all she dreamed about was helping animals. A naturally curious, caring and empathetic girl, she had lots of pets, a menagerie of sorts! As a teenager she worked in a pet store, and would regularly bring home animals to rehabilitate or rehome, sneaking them on the bus in a bag or in her pockets, to be met at home by her Mum exclaiming, “Oh, what did you bring home now!”

Free Self-Guided Tour Showcasing the Best of Coromandel's Art Scene

For many years, the Coromandel Town area has had a reputation as a notable centre for arts and crafts in New Zealand. Talented artists are often drawn here from other areas not just for the beautiful views but also the lively art community. Every year since 2006, many of these artists have been opening up their studios on the first two weekends of October, for the Coromandel Open Studios Arts Tour.

Tawa Rikihana, also known as Derrick ‘Rick’ Rikihana, is a Māori artist from the Te Arawa iwi and the Tuhourangi-Tarawhai hapū. His Awa (ancestral river) is Te Wairoa, and his Maunga (mountain) is Tarawera. Rick’s wharenui, Hinemihi o Tarawhai, holds significant cultural importance to him and his whānau.

While walking the dogs today, it dawned on me that A-R-T, are the first three letters in the word ‘artificial’. Intrigued, I looked up the origin of the word and was pleasantly surprised. The first records of the word come from around 1400 and its roots lie ultimately in the Latin artificiālis, meaning ‘belonging to art’, from artificium, meaning ‘skill’. Now that was completely unexpected.
