What Does the Baby Remember?
What if your story began before your first conscious memory?
We often think of memory as something that begins when we are old enough to talk, to remember people, places, and events. But what if memory is more than what we can consciously recall? What if our earliest experiences are held in the body, the nervous system, our emotional patterns or even in some deeper layer of consciousness?
In this episode of the Cosmic Birth Podcast, Julia explores one of the most fascinating questions in prenatal and perinatal psychology:
If babies are conscious before birth, what might they be experiencing?
We'll explore the pioneering work of David Chamberlain and Thomas Verny, along with ideas from prenatal psychology, birth psychology, developmental neuroscience, trauma research, and the growing conversation around consciousness and memory.
Together, we'll wonder about:
• What babies may perceive and experience in the womb
• Whether prenatal experiences can influence us later in life
• The possibility of birth memory and implicit body memory
• How the emotional environment surrounding pregnancy may affect the developing baby
• What a baby might experience during birth and the transition into the world
• The difference between conscious memory and implicit, emotional, and bodily memory
• Whether our earliest experiences shape our expectations about safety, connection, trust, and belonging
• What it might mean to consider birth as our first major relational experience
This is an invitation to become curious about the possibility that our story began much earlier than we have been taught to believe.
Perhaps our first memories aren't stored as pictures or words.
Perhaps they are held as sensations.
As expectations.
As a felt sense of whether the world is safe, whether someone will come when we call, whether we belong, and whether we are welcomed here.
And perhaps the question isn't only:
What does the baby remember?
But also:
What has the baby never forgotten?
