Could improved US-Japan relations hinge on Japan increasing its defense spending

Increased defense spending is a key factor in improving U.S.- Japan relations and strengthening their security alliance, especially with a renewed "America First" agenda in the U.S.. In October 2025, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi accelerated Japan's commitment to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP, a move that has been favorably received by the Trump administration.
